SQl on Web Server or on different machine - 12/18/2001 11:30:05
Right now I have a web server and a SQL server, two different machines. Would it be better to run the web and SQL togther and mirror it with the other machine or keep them seperate. Thanks Smitty John A. Smith sorryiforgot.com hairschool.org If you have to ask "Who's the man?" Your probaly not him.

Thanks, I'm in the middle of re-installing all of the software to both and setting them up. Should I get a nother machine to act as back up for both, and if so is there some software that makes this easier? Thanks Smitty John A. It's a AMD 850MHz with 128Ram and a 30GIG harddrive, I plan to up the memory to the max if that helps. What the Hell, may as well do it anyway, memory so cheap. What kind on machine would be Idealy suited for this SQL stuff? Thanks Smitty John A. Smith sorryiforgot.com hairschool.org If you have to ask "Who's the man?" Your probaly not him.

We're running SQL on a Dell 6400 -four Xeon 800MHZ and 4GB RAM, RAID3 w/ 9GB SCSI drives. It's "almost" as quick as the SUN box running Oracle Gil Harvey

If thats the Cadillac, I may be stuck with the Yugo. Gil, Should I ask what you hardware cost, I'm already locked into the windows stuff and don't want to throw away a whole bunch of money. I did get Redhat Linux, but after playing with it for a couple of months I got rid of it. Too different and couldn't figure it out, nobody at work uses it. Thanks Smitty John A. Gil, So my 850MHz AMD with 128 and a 30gig IDE for only a address book type service needs to be stepped up? Was that $25,000 for the box, my car didn't cost that much, ouchh. That will have to wait until I make some money off the site. Thanks Smitty John A. Smith sorryiforgot.com hairschool.org If you have to ask "Who's the man?" Your probaly not him.

Well after all of your feedback and three weeks of trying to get everything going again, with little to no progres. I have made a command decision. Give the headache to someone with asprin. I will be hosted with readyhosting, and should be able to sleep at night again. I'll try to keep current on things that I can manage and have an interest in. I will keep the server up with SQL as a learning/web testing area. Thank you all for your help, it wasn't in vain. Smitty John A. Don't try to max out your memory while running windows. Windows gets an awful "out of memory" problem (go figure) if you install more that 512 megs. (Unless you reconfigure the batch size, which only works some times) Why did you give up on Red Hat Linux? I use it, and love it (I also have windows on the other HD for running FP, Autodesk, the LAN, etc) Semper Fidelis
