FP publishing: Web Pages labeled "conflict" - 7/3/2009 7:37:53
Hi..............
When I am trying to publish with FP I get an error message that a number (about 150) of my web pages are "in conflict" with the files on the server, this message:
Some items have changed on both the local and remote sites and are in conflict
and would I:
"like to overwrite the destination files" or
"ignore and continue"
If I opt to overwrite the destination files - the next time I try to publish a web update these same files are identified as in conflict again. So publishing doesn't solve the problem.
None of these web pages have been changed. I also notice that in the left pane fo the publish window, there is no information in the "Modified" date column. Dates are shown for all other files.
I can open a file labeled as in conflict, change it, then publish it, and it won't be on the list the next time. However, there are hundreds of web pages involved - and they really are already indentical to the pages on the web site.
Can anyone suggest how I can eliminate these so called "conflicts"??

Fastest fix would be to delete everything on the server and publish a fresh copy.

Oh M'gawd ...................
I have so many files and add ins and everything else there over the years..............
No alternative to that??
Could I instead say, publish the site from the server to my computer, then just use that as my working copy?

That would probably work.
Another way to go (if you're in FP 2003) would be to just move the individual files that you have edited. When you get the the publishing interface, you can see your local site in the left and your remote on the left. You can click on a file to highlight. Then click the "right" arrow between the 2 windows to move that individual file.
That's what I do for big sites anyway.

That does work (copying the files) but it still doesn't eliminate the error message. I need to find a way to be able to resume the normal publishing process.
When you publish, FP tells you what files are "missing" so you can delete the unneeded files (pages, images, etc) from the server and thus avoid building up hundreds of obsolete files. - copying, while it works, has drawbacks.

One last question: My FP manual says the folder _vti_cnf located in my servers (web site) root directory contains information on each file in the web site ie:when the file was last saved, who saved it, file size etc. This appears to be a copy of all the web pages. If I copied those pages to my local web, would that then automatically "match" the files so FP wouldn't think there was a conflict? Or am i playing with fire here.

You could reinstall FP server extensions on the server. If you're using a FP theme or nav component then you need to be sure to check "Options > Publish All files..." when you go to publish after the reinstall.

Hello and thanks for the suggestions.
I copied the files (in FP using the publish interface) from the server to my computer. There were around 1400 files, but it was a lot safer than any other method. Plus it worked !!
Any idea how all those file could have suddenly (out of the blue) shown as "in conflict"? There were about 300 or so web pages and the rest were image files ....................

I've seen it happen may times, I have not been able to figure out for certain why. It's only a big deal when you have tons of files like that. I feel your pain.
