Customizing OScommerce? - 7/8/2009 19:32:37
Hello all, My mother-in-law has decided to try her hand at e-commerce. She decided on selling her custom made baby things (bags, burp cloths, little plastic underwear, etc) online due to the hoopla surrounding the stuff made for her new granddaughter. So she asked me to design something for her... FOR FREE! She pulled the "I'm your Mother-In-Law" card. I've never done anything like this and looked into different options. One being OSCommerce. Has anyone used it? I know it's open source but how easy is it to customize it to your look and feel? Thanks!!!!!

How many different products will she be selling, approximately? Will the products have lots of optional stuff that would change the price? If less than 20 products and no product options then I think a full blown shopping cart would be overkill. A Paypal shopping cart would do everything you need with way less hassle. The new 1 price shipping boxes from the US Postal Service make it so that you don't need to calculate shipping costs inside the US. Just build the shopping cost into the product price. I still use Andy From Spain's http://www.ecommercetemplates.com/ product to build full-blown carts mainly because I have never had trouble with it, and I know the code like the back of my hand. Andy was 1 of the very first OutFronters, and his folks do a nice job with support. Andy's carts support Amazon Payments. I have not used Amazon Payments on a project, but I've tinkered in an account. It's just as easy to use as Paypal, but anyone who has purchased products from amazon in the past can purchase from your cart with a single click. All of the payment info goes from Amazon's db to process the transaction. Looks like a very slick way to go. You can get more info on that at https://payments.amazon.com .
