I would like to know if it's possible to read (scan) the shipping labels (UPS / FedEx / USPS, etc) with a conventional hand held scanner gun; and get the shipping information downloaded to a PC for a data base.
I'm working in a project to create an inventory control for the packages received. Some packages are customer related and others administrative related.

We wrote a program like this back in 1998 using a simple gun scanner and ASP. Nowadays, barcode scanners have their own built-in software to convert the scan to OCR/data/image and dump into database, image file, etc.. I'd start with the scanner hardware manufacturer and see what they have in software solutions--it'll be cheaper than trying to write this yourself.
