Headphones - 7/15/2009 3:13:08
Went to the headphone section of a store, told the sales assistant that I wanted to buy a pair of headphones so I could listen to loud music through my computer and also so I could chat to the one friend I have that happens to live in the US. Came home with a pair of Logitech ones that cost $42, spent all night trying to get them to work on the computer that has Yahoo Messenger, no luck. Returned to the same store today, traded them in for the equivalent Microsoft ones. These headphones came with a disk that loaded but conflicting messages were still received and the end result is that they are not working either. Plug them into partner's laptop and they are working fine. Both headphones instruction guides have said to make sure that under: start >> control panel >> sound and audio devices and under the "Audio" tab, to select the Logitech / Microsoft Headphones from the drop down list under "Sound Playback" and "Sound Recording". This is the thing. They're not listed on my computer, only "Sound Blaster Live 24-bit" and "modem #2 line playback" are listed. But on partner's laptop as soon as I plug them in, they just work. When I look under control panel, sound/audio etc. they're listed on his laptop, but not on my computer, so I can't select them. Does anyone have any idea how I can get the headphones to list in the drop-down menu so I can select them? Edit: On Partner's Laptop (Vista): Just plug them in and all instantly works fine. No need to download any software with the Logitech ones, the sound was just playing through the headphones perfectly. When I checked start >> control panel >> sound and audio devices under the audio tab, the headphones were listed and were automatically selected. On My Second Computer (XP SP2) Don't use computer much, doesn't have Yahoo Messenger: Plugged them and under start >> control panel >> sound and audio devices under the audio tab, the headphones were listed and were automatically selected. But there was no sound. On The Computer I want them attached to (XP SP2): Just wouldn't work at all. No matter what I tried the Logitech ones would not work and would not list themsellves on the drop-down menu.

Hmm... On Vista I didn't have any problems with headphones either. On XP is there a little speaker icon on the right hand corner of your screen? If so can you right mouse on it and check the mixer to be sure it is not muted? Do this after you plug in your headphone to your laptop. If you google "No headphone sound on XP" you will see that you are not the only one having that problem. Sony laptops seem to be one that has problems with headphone sound. And some brands have disabled the sound out so that you can't record music.

Hi Don, Thanks for responding, no, nothing is "muted". This morning the problem has become more confusing. I've tried the headphones in two other computers for different results. Laptop running Vista, as mentioned, just have to plug the headphones in and they work automatically. They're obviously also listed in list of default devices in start >> control panel >> sounds and audio devices >> audio. Laptop running XP, same as above. Old desktop running XP, no sound through headphones but they are listed in the list of devices in start >> control panel >> sounds and audio devices >> audio. Newer Desktop running XP, This is the computer I want them to be connected to as it's the computer I use most and is the only one with yahoo messenger. No sound through speakers, not listed in above mentioned list of devices. Also, when this computer starts up a dialogue box appears asking me to insert disk for the new hardware that its found. Even when I do that and files load onto the computer it still doesn't work. I shouldn't have to do that anyway though as I haven't had to do it on the other three computers. The two desktops also both have speakers attached. Can they remain attached while I'm using headphones? Is it possible that there's some conflict between the speakers and the headphones? The speakers use a jack and the headphones use a usb port if that's important at all.

Thanks Donkey. The computer I want the headphones on only has one mixer device, that is Sound Blaster Live 24-bit. The other desktop has got two - Sound Max Digital Audio and Microsoft Life Chat LX-3000. Therefore "swapping between available devices" as you say is impossible on the computer I want it on because there is only one option, the headphones don't show up there. On the other PC, where it is listed, I swapped between available devices and still no sound through headphones.

Are you plugging the USB phones into a port in the front or the back of the pc?

No Change whatsoever. Silly thing is, months ago while messaging with this friend in the US, I pulled out a "very" old pair of headphones (circa 1998) and spoke with her. It all worked nicely except that because of the very poor quality of the headphones, she sounded very distant and apparently I sounded the same. Those old headphones used a jack instead of a USB port. Unfortunately I discarded those old headphones when I last moved house, but I'm wondering that maybe audio devices on my computer needs jacks instead of USB connections.

This might help (from a Google search) quote:
1. You can have two two sound cards installed in a system but you will have to select which one is in use. You can't use both at the same time. to select the sound card in use go to: control panel --> sound and audio devices --> tab: audio --> sound playback 2. In some systems even that won't work. Drivers for e.g. Realtek are (obviously) not optimized for a situation where there is another sound card in the system. The same with Sound Blaster or any other sound card. So no-one gonna guarantee that their product will work alongside of other sound card. So you are typically advised to disable onboard audio in bios and use the add-on sound card (for better clarity quality etc) If that's the case you can always put a jack splitter into line 1 output on the soundcard and split the signal into two - one for front speakers and one for the headset. If it's Skype VOIP they have some very good help files. I vaguely remember having to use the SoundMax on board audio rather than the Soundblaster card for Skype/headphones to work and that was using the mic in out jacks at the back of the machine.

Thanks to everyone who responded. The headphones are now on their way back to being repackaged and will be available for re-purchasing anytime soon. Stay tuned for the upcoming thread "Nicole buys an ipod"
