From FP to Expression or Dreamweaver? - 7/21/2009 7:31:37
I've been using Front Page for many years, but when we upgrade the computer, I will probably have to switch to a newer web publishing program. How similar is Microsoft Expression to Front Page? Which is easier to learn, Expression or Dreamweaver? How easy was it to convert your Front Page web sites to Expression or Dreamweaver? Thanks.

I would have liked to go Expression for a couple of reasons:

Less expensive than DW

A tad more similar and friendlier to FP.

I actually moved to DW about six years ago while still maintaining many sites with FP. The learning curve for me was rather steep because I was learning Flash and CSS at the same time. Now, I wouldn't say that I handle DW like I used to handle FP. I found Expression easier to handle and frankly, I think the guys at MS did a good job especially if we consider the difference in price.

One thing is a fact: more corporations are purchasing DW than Expression so if you are going to design for a corporation that wishes to modify content using DW, you'll find it hard to sell them on Expression.

I use this example: Swish is fantastic. It can do a lot of what Flash can do but still, people want true Flash and not Swish. The same goes for Expression and DW at least with the kind of clients I work with. It's a matter of personal preferences. The truth is that the ability resides in the designer and not the software.

Let us know which one you chose

Thanks for the overview. After reading your post, I'm leaning toward Expression. I'm a volunteer webmaster for a few sites, not a professional, so ease of use and low cost are important. Thanks.
