unable to save modified pages - 8/7/2009 14:17:54
Hi there,
My name is Keith and I am new to this forum.

Between myself and the one to be obeyed we have managed to build a web using front page and publish it sucessfully for a couple of years now.
After copying the web to a CD; then restoring factory settings on the PC and reloading the software I can no longer save any modified pages.
i.e.
make the changes, try to "save as" and I get this message,

Server error: Cannot open file “C:\Location of file followed by web site name\_vti_pvt\service.lck”for writing

Anybody got any idea what I have done wrong and how I can rectify this.

Keith

Welcome to the Outfront Forums Keith,

Problem could be that you're trying to access a web that has been copied to a location rather than published to that particular locataion. OR, the Service.lck file can also be corrupted.

To rectify this, you must locate the Service.lck file and delete it.

The _vti_pvt folder is a hidden folder, so make sure that you can view hidden files and folders - on the Tools menu of any folder, click Folder Options. On the View tab, click to select the Show hidden files and folders check box, and then click to clear the Hide file extension for known file types check box. You will now be able to locate the the Service.lck file and delete it. Next time FrontPage is opened, it will create a new Service.lck file.

In addition to Swoosh's reply,

Somewhere I read that when you COPY a web to a CD, all the files become read only.

Don is correct

I am under the assumption that you restored the web back onto the Hard Drive hence your file path given from the error message:

C:\Location of file followed by web site name\_vti_pvt\service.lck”for writing

To expand slightly what Don/Swoosh are correctly saying... The files are "read only" once you copy them from the CD to your hard drive. This is due to the CD being read only and it setting the attributes when you initially copied them to the CD. So, you will likely just need to change the attribute of this file, and more than likely some others, to uncheck read only (right click file, select properties, uncheck read only).
