Shading over webpage blocks links - 8/9/2009 14:55:27
This issue is now fixed, but I'm wondering if anyone else has ever heard of this happening. It's a very weird phenomenon. I did an update to all my web pages (changed the footer). I had viewed my site a few times before doing this, and then went to view it again to make sure it had updated correctly. Much to my horror, suddenly a grey-ish shading went over the page that blocked/disabled all the links that were underneath it. The shading extended down to not far "below the fold" (below the bottom of the screen) and below the shading the links were fine. I tried a few other pages on my site and they all had this weird shading. I tried some other websites but it was only happening on my site. Firebug showed the shading to be a DIV with an ID of "ga-shade" that appeared at the end of the web page's code. But the weirdest thing was that it wasn't in the View Source, nor in the source code on my computer. I wish I'd copied the whole code line now, but I didn't -- I was too busy panicking. This happened in Firefox. After an urgent cry to my webhost, I tried my site in IE8 and it was fine - no weird shading and all links were active. I tried disabling, then uninstalling Firebug (kill the messenger), then clearing the FF cache and reloading a few times -- nothing cleared it. I finally tried clearing the cookies just for my website (using a Firefox add-on) and it cleared it! I couldn't believe it. I only have Amazon and Google Adsense on the site, which shouldn't be depositing malware cookies. The Adsense ads are text-only, although the Amazon ads are almost all graphic. Maybe the cookie was dropped by another site, but why would it do this only to my site? Anyway, the problem has been corrected, but I'm wondering if anyone else has ever heard of this happening. I swear I've seen this happen before, a long time ago, but I don't remember what happened. Weirdest thing I ever saw. If nothing else, maybe this post will help someone else if it happens to them too. Starhugger

You say that code wasn't in the source. Then it must have been on the server. Have you looked at all of your files on the server for a odd file?

Hi Don, No, I didn't check the server files, although that would have been a good thing to try. It would be gone now, in any case. My webhost wasn't seeing it from his end, and I wasn't seeing it in IE8. It was only when I cleared the cookies on my own computer that it finally disappeared. Weird!! SH
