FireFox Table Problem - 8/10/2009 17:50:04
Hi there…

First of all let me tell you that I am aware that this problem has been discussed various times on different website however I didn’t find a solution for my own specific problem / website yet, therefore I am hoping someone can help me out here on your forum.

The thing is that I do all my design in FrontPage because I don’t know much about how to write code, etc. Therefore I like the ‘’see what you get’’ approach of FP. However in Firefox, my tables show up distorted and as about 30% nowadays is using FF, it looks rather peculiar and for a site like mine this simply means – losing potential customers.

So it would be great if someone could tell me why things are messed up in Firefox. I use FrontPage for years now and don’t feel much for switching to Dreamweaver or another Web Developing Tool.

Anyway,…this is my site. On all other pages the tables keep shifting as well….

Any ideas?

Thanks so much !! :)

Trouble with FrontPage - as you probably know - is that without careful handling it produces bad code which modern browsers (not IE in other words!) will be unable to read properly.

I'm not at my desktop at the moment so I can't do much error chasing for you - but I notice that there seems to be a mix of inline and document head styling along with old style formatting tags which make it hard to track down problems.

I'd suggest starting off by ensuring there are no coding errors - run the site through the W3C validator and fix those errors. Then at least you're not relying on various browsers' error handling routines! It'll also be easier to trouble-shoot.

I'd also go back over the code and make sure the widths applied to the various table cells (really shouldn't be using tables for layout!) are correct - in particular where you're using percentages.

Whilst it may be difficult to take the time to learn to code properly (unless you're a designer!) I'd suggest that it might be worth looking at more modern options.

On a quick look with FF3.5.2 it looked OK to me, but checking with the Web Developer extension I noticed that among the proprietary code warnings there seemed to be a number of <img> not closed warnings, so if you attend to them it might be a start. In fact if you use the Tidy option with that extension and replace your code (sorry, you do have to get your hands a little dirty with this) with the Tidy generated code, it might solve your problem.

Tailslide is right in that FP can produce clean code, but only if you stay away from design view and work in code view, then it is like Notepad on steroids. You might like to try Expression Web v2, it has a similar feel to FP but produces cleaner code in design view (so I am told). I think that MS has a trial version that you can try.

Hey,

Thanks for your replies. I already checked for errors with the W3C Validator and about 177 errors showed up so that is like a "No Way Jose" approach for me to check them all as I am no crack in code!

It might be true that it looks OK in FF3 but I am using FF2 as i like certain things in the older version that were changed in FF3. So I guess that FireFox has solved this table - shifting problem in their newer version

However either way, I will try with the recommended software to see if things turn out smoother than with FP, thanks so much!
I will post an update moment I know more :)
