Can we register internet keywords - 8/11/2009 1:58:48
1. Can my company register 'internet key words'? If so, how?

Background to question:
My company has been approached by a domain name registration company in Hong Kong who has a client who wants to register 'internet keywords' that they say my company is the original user of.

2. Am I correct that the concept of 'internet key words' is based in China (and doesn't exist elsewhere) so that a person in China could type into their browser a keyword in Chinese characters, and find the associated URL?

3. Where is the best place to find restrictions on registering domain names with .cn, .hk and .eu endings?

Many thanks in advance for any assistance.

I had this about 2 years ago with a client's site and because the client was a local business I thought that he wouldn't want to be called out to customers in China. :) So I told them that we had rights to that domain name for 5 years or so and weren't interested. However if your business is international it might be a different matter.
From what I gather this keyword registration business is limited to China and it's satellites, it requires that the user has installed software.

quote:

The use of mixed Internet Keyword is the same as Internet Keyword, any user who installed official client-end software of Chinese version can directly enter mixed Internet Keyword in forms of “website name: retrieved keyword” in address bar of browser to get destination page, reduce steps and improve efficiency to surf on Internet.

As I understand it is a way to interpret Chinese characters for searching; of course it will also be of interest to SEO's wherever they are.
ICANN is the governing body for domain organisation but this German company has information that is a lot easier to read than the ICANN documentation!

It also includes info on the .eu domains.
Of course I could be wrong about all this, it's my interpretation only; there is more interpretation about the whole internet governance thing from a US perspective in this blog from Syracuse Univ. http://blog.internetgovernance.org/blog/_archives/2009/2/27/4106677.html
