CSS and changing from FP to Expression - 8/14/2009 18:40:24
Hi there. I've had a site for a couple years that I've made with FP. It's all made with tables, nothing fancy, no FP specific elements. I'm now changing over to Expression. Well, I made life hard for myself with FP and I made my left, horizontal navigation bar separately on each page of my site. So, I've decided to use an external CSS in Expression to create this navigation bar so I don't have to change every page of my web when I add something to the bar. I assume an external CSS is the way to go?! Anyway, do I need to delete the navigation bar from every page in addition to adding an external CSS to all my pages. I assume I can't keep the navigation bar there in addition to adding the external CSS. Using CSS is very new to me so any help is appreciated. If you want to take a look, the site is: http://www.freeprintablebehaviorcharts.com

Thanks ahead!

Maybe I am missing something here, but I don't see a left "horizontal" nav menu. I see a lot of links vertically down the left side of the page.

If that is what you mean by a nav bar, then yes you would remove all of those links and redo them to make a CSS Nav bar.

But why do it?. Just leave it as is and use EW to maintain your site as is..

If you want to tackle a CSS horizontal menu using EW then look at this tutorial:

Just a quick point - I might be misunderstanding you (it's a bit early!) but it sounds like you think CSS will act as a sort of include - it won't.

To stop you having to do a version of your navigation on all your pages you'd need to use includes (PHP, SSI whatever) which is an external file containing just your menu which you then call on each page in the spot where you want your menu to appear. That way if you need to change the menu (e.g. add a new page) you only change it in the include page.

Having a CSS file linked from all pages will allow you to change the look of all your pages in one go by changing the rules relating to the elements on your pages. It can't change the HTML itself.

Sorry if I've misunderstood.

Thank you so much for your response! I finally figured that out yesterday! I need to use includes and that's what I'm working on. For some reason, I thought I had to use CSS to build a navigation structure but the includes are great. I'm continuing in Front Page for the time being and will switch over to Expression later. I assume I have to modify the includes in some way for expression. I've seen something about that online. Thanks for looking and trying to make sense out of my question!
