Expression Web 2 keeps crashing - 8/20/2009 22:47:42
I upgraded to Expression Web 2 from Frontpage 2003 and I'm slowly changing the web pages from using Frontpage webbot includes to using PHP includes. I have to make extensive use of the Find-and Replace feature, but EW2 keeps crashing on me! That is, it seems to crash most often when I try to do a F&R. I often load a number of pages at once (up to about 12) and then ask it to search "all open pages" to do the F&R. Maybe this is more than EW2 can handle, but FP used to do it no problem and EW2 still has the feature so I assume it's supposed to still be able to do it.

I know crashing is a common problem in EW2. I am also aware of FP Cleaner and use it regularly to clear out both old Frontpage and EW2 debris. But it often crashes even after just a few F&R runs. This is starting to drive me a little nuts.

Is there some trick to using extensive Find-and-Replace's in EW2, or is EW2 just a house of cards waiting for a puff of wind? Anyone find a better solution for this problem?

I'm running it on a Vista Home Premium machine. I also have Frontpage 2003 installed, since I need to use FP to do semi-monthly web updates until I get it fully functional on EW2. I don't usually run them at the same time though. I also have 3 GB of usable memory.

Help please? :)

No help, but I use the find and replace on bigger sites without the crashing at all. Nearly 100 pages? I don't search open pages though, just the entire site. Maybe that is causing problems opening more? using more memory? My setup is similar too - EW2, FP03, Vista Business 3GB, plus a bunch of other software. My EW seems to crash if I try to insert an image sometimes. Or if I've been updating a page for a long time and forget to save it! :)

Thanks for replying, Brian. I think EW sucks too. :)

It doesn't seem to manage or recover memory very well, does it? I am noticing this a lot. You might be right about loading a bunch of pages. The size of the whole site is a few hundred, and because not all of them were coded the same way, I need to see what's there to know what to change and whether I need to do something different with some than others. But I suppose I could try certain big F&R across the site or even just for selected pages in a directory listing and see if that helps a bit.

I wanted to go with Dreamweaver but the price was more than I wanted to spend. I'm beginning to wish I'd bought it anyway. Sigh...

Thanks for the suggestions. :)

Actually, I'm seeing that EW seems to know how to work with Frontpage includes, which didn't seem to be the case when I looked at the pages before. Maybe it was partly because of my Adblock, but it still wasn't doing the headers and footers properly. And it still doesn't seem to let you create FP includes, correct?

Also, it doesn't seem to manage PHP includes very well in that it seems sometimes they will only work with an URL path that starts with the root directory, and other times it wants a relative URL to the page's location. I still haven't figured that one out completely, and EW doesn't seem to keep track of it either. Very frustrating... Anyone have any pointers about that? Or can you point me to a website that explains it clearly?

Thanks for any help with this. :)

EW 2 does FP includes just fine.

Thanks for the link, Don. I actually checked them out a few months ago but didn't find them very helpful. I'll search their forum though and see if I find information about this.

Thanks!

Just ask you question there. They are most helpful but they will want to know more info like a link to your site.

I also use EW2 and FrontPage. No problems so far with EW2 here.

It's strange that some people report a lot of crashing problems and others say it runs fine. I wonder what the difference is? Is it a computer setup issue? Operating system? Maybe EW conflicts with other software? Very weird. From everything I've seen, Microsoft seems oblivious to it. I guess it runs fine on their computers. :-S The only solution I could find in a search was FP Clean, which seems to help but not for long.
