Sending DRW Results to a Database - 8/27/2009 11:49:47
Dear Group, been a while since I have been on this forum, but it has always been helpful. So I thank everyone in advance.

I have a scheduling DB that users selct from a list of names and then chose an assignment the submit using a form. Been working great for years. There are about 50 names to chose from, but at any given time only 20 or so would be used as they are assigned shifts..

I would like to "prepopulate the form, based on the names that match a certain shift. In other words a DB results area showing a list of names based on a search of a shift. Then be able through form fields add the time/assignment ect then submit to DB.

I have tryed everything, but the form will not write to the db. If I ahow one record at a time, when i click the arrow (next record) it does put that name in the db but never gives me a page with the next record....

Any ideas?????

Thanks

Jim

Well Jim it would seem that instead of using the DRW you might want to look at using the Database Interface Wizard. This will allow you have more of an application than simply placing database results on a page. The wizard will allow you to create a listing, a submission form, an edit form, etc. it will even let you set up the interface as password protected. The default layout kind of stinks being in frames but with a little work you can change this too. I suggest giving that a shot and see what you get then work with it...
With your site open click on New then select the database interface wizard from templates and follow the prompts. Add it to the current website and let it do its thing. It will ask you if you want to password protect and gives you the option of having only a results page and a submission form (not what I think you want) or including a database editor that allows you to view, add and edit your database in the browser.
Believe me, with a little work and a little creativity you'd be surprised what you can do with the basic package FP churns out.:)

thanks Mike for your fast reply....,

I have used the DIW many times and I concur it is good. What i want to do the DIW will not do. I need to be able to post to the database from a form, but i would like the form to pull in, or prepopulate a couple fields from another table.........

does that make sense????

Thanks

Jim

Just thought I'd stop back and give you an idea of what you can do with the DIW.
The Non Conformance Resource on my local intranet
:)
with a link to add a new record
:)
or the list of open records
:)
from the list you click on the log no. to select a detail record
:)
at the bottom of the detail page (not shown) are buttons to go to the edit form (or to print the record)
:)
after submitting the edit form you're brought to the update page
:)
where the log no. link allows you to go to a printable copy of the record.
:)
Of course the whole thing is useless if you can't search for a specific record.
:)
I hope this might give you a little encouragement. :) With the exception of the home page and the search page this was all generated from the database interface wizard results.

Makes sense but I've never tried something like that. Usually I just merge all my tables into one all encompassing one. :)
When I get use of my right eye back I'll play with it a bit.
