Used to be able to "Publish" ... but can't no... - 9/7/2009 13:35:35
Hi all .... I'm using FP 2002 on a laptop running Vista home premium .... Within the last 3 weeks, my original hard drive took a dive and had to be replaced. Prior to my hard drive crashing, I could update my FP site on my laptop and hit Publish and off it would go .... quick as a fox; never a problem in getting changes published; site updated very quickly. Since I've replaced my hard drive and had to re-install everything, I've not been able to hit Publish and get my changes published to my server ..... Nothing on my server has changed .... the FP extensions have always been there. This problem has occured only after getting the new hard drive and having to start from scratch. When I make changes locally and hit Publish, the location and log-in screens appear and the correct information is entered. Then the "listing pages" in the local drive appears, then the "listing pages" in the server notice appears. This last "listing pages" for the server just stays there until I get a message that the "server has unexpectedly closed the connection" and my site doesn't get updated. I never see any notice as I did before that anything is actually being published ... and, in fact, it's not getting published .... I'm looking for any ideas because I've run out of them !! And thanks in advance for any and all help ....

Thanks for that link, Swoosh ..... Unfortunately, there wasn't one suggestion or workaround in that thread that helped get me back to where I was ..... So far, this is what I've done: - I've uninstalled and re-installed FP 2002 - I've deleted all the web files from my laptop. Then created another web location on my laptop and copied the files back into that location. - Already had done several of the suggestions from Swoosh's link in the above reply. Still not publishing, though ....

Just for kicks, try to see if you can get to the server using a FTP program. If you don't have one, I would recommend FileZilla. But any FTP program should be OK.

Getting in to the server via FTP has never been a problem .... it's just getting changes "Published" through FP that's gotten to be a problem ....

Is it a large publish? meaning ALOT of files, graphics or even databases? If so, try to publish only one file and see what happens

No, actually, it's not a lot of pages .... The entire site has been published (a long time ago), and there are only two pages that I update on a regular basis, so I have everything except those two pages listed as "Do Not Publish" ... So, I'm only trying to "publish" two pages .....

I will also say that I've had the FP extensions re-installed on the server, too (just to cover all the bases that I know to cover) .....

quote:
"server has unexpectedly closed the connection" I did a google on he above quote and got lots of hits. One fix was that some trojans or virus can case it. Another is to delete the the Web contents folders in Program Files/Common Files/Microsoft Shared/..... So WEB FOLDERS etc etc. Frontpage then asks to be re-installed. Another says his firewall caused the problem. Lots of other causes also listed in the google search.

This is somewhat similar to an issue I have noticed with FP recently. Since I still have a number of sites built with FP and do not have the time to rebuild them right now I have been stuck with doing updates etc using FP. I have a few sites that I have great difficulty even opening now and it has gotten progressively worse the last few months. I honestly believe it is due to a change in one of IE7's dll's that came down with an update. I have uninstalled and reinstalled FP a few times but it often will not fix the issue of only fix it temporarily. The few sites I have the most problem with use a shared border and in fact one of the sites will not open at all now locally. I can open the site live on the server, and I have brought the site down a few times and this is a temporary fix. For those having trouble like the person above, I recommend you open the site on the server and publish down to a folder on your drive as this will often be a fi\x whether long term or not remains to be seen. I can usually tell if I will be able to open the site, because cpu time will immediately go to 99% and never drop below that even after waiting 20 minutes or more...which is unheard of with a 30 or 40 page site. Bytheway, I am running XP Pro SP3 and Office 2003 on this particular install. Of the sites that still use FP that do NOT have shared borders, I have far less problems and it does appear to be slower now than a few months ago, at least I am able to get changes down and published. There may be some that do not know how tied in with IE FP really is, but I remember some years ago having a lot of trouble with a shared border and an IE Repair enabled me to fix the problem. Sorry I rambled a bit but thought this might lead to more discussion. Rick
