FP2K can't find http://localhost ... sometimes. - 12/19/2001 2:29:24
I had to reload Win98 clean, too many blue and black screens. Happened after loading ICQ, AIM, Yahoo IM, and a fresh Norton SystemWorks on this 62mb Win98 Laptop. Almost everything works... except Mr. Gates' stuff, like, IE5, MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PWS, and FrontPage. Ah well. Updates may fix things after a while, and thankfully, black and blue lockups are more rare. But now, FP will not OPEN htt p://localhost/ and the other webs there. I get these errors: File, Open Web [htt p:/localhost/] "The current operation cannot be completed because an unexpected error has occurred." ... or for File, Open Web [htt p:/127.0.0.1] or [htt p:/localhost/anywebthere/] "The folder 'htt p://127.0.0.1' isn't accessible. The folder may be located on an unavailable volume or protected with a password." The workaround is a real pain. I can drill down to the directory declared in PW manager as "Home", c:\pws\webpub\wwwroot\, and open webs from there. (Curiously, FP does not normally allow this! A small favor, anyway, so I'm not dead in the water.) I can publish to, or create webs at htt p:/localhost/ just fine. And all operations on the remote server are completely normal. ----- Bill Dawes Webmaster, ColorPro Communications http://colorpro.com/designs Distinctive and effective Web site designs and hosting Edited by - wmdawes on 12/20/2001 12:35:47

I'm not sure I understand: Are you saying you cannot publish to http://127.0.0.1/sitename ? Gil Harvey

If you "publish" a site to http://127.0.0.1/name/ then will it open from FP at http://127.0.0.1/name/ ? Gil Harvey

I did not have any problems PUBLISHING to localhost, 127.0.0.1, or my computer's name on my wireless LAN (htt p://cc460892-b) , or to misc. DNS numbers I dug out of the system... just OPENING them. MSIE could, but FP couldn't. FP would only OPEN webs from c:\pws\webpub\wwwroot\. GUESS WHAT? I just tried what HAD been impossible: FP actually OPENED localhost, 127.0.0.1, and htt p://cc460892-b. NOW IT IS WORKING. Not sure how this got fixed! I used the Repair facility in MS Office Premium 2000 SR-1... again. I had done this before. I doubt that it did the trick. The OTHER thing I did was remove the passwords on the shared files on this box and the one upstairs. The reason I did this was hints in an email from FP MVP Jens Peter Karlsen. He had sent these links: See these KB articles: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q234233 http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q266665 http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q264749 http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q260755 Regards Jens Peter Karlsen. Microsoft MVP - Frontpage. Some of the above talk about 'Network' and 'passwords'. I remembered that my problems seemed to start when I got cute and tried PW's on the shared files on the upstairs computer. Another talks about, of all things, the arrow on shortcut Icons, and changing it by using Tweak UI, which I did. I also removed all passwords on both my laptop (on my wireless LAN, to a LinkSys WAP) and my upstairs desktop, using Windows Explorer, adjusting File Properties, Sharing. ONE of the above things has WORKED. Sheesh! When I get some courage, I'll try LOSING localhost again and report back to this thread. Thanks for your assistance! passwords? hey did you guys read that third articlequote: This behavior can occur if the shortcut arrow is missing on your shortcut icons.
what the heck does the shortcut arrow have to do with opening a web? #3 http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q264749 Edited by - caywind on 12/25/2001 03:49:55 Edited by - caywind on 12/25/2001 03:50:43
