Questions about two domain names and one site - 9/13/2009 11:00:34
I've taken over the management of a site for a client. There are two domain names for this site. The first one, the one the site is built under is www.minorproductname.com. The URL has the name of one of their minor, but unique products in it's name. The second domain name is www.nameofthecompany.com. This one is masked to point to www.minorproductname.com. They tend to market the site with the domain name www.nameofthecompany.com. However, there are links all over the internet pointing to various pages using both domain names. It's almost as if the search engines think that there are two sites out there. My question is, what are the challenges and benefits of this situation? There have been a lot of issues with the site and we're resolving those, but I need to focus on boosting their search engine rankings and I'm not sure how this dual domain name thing factors in. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

what are the challenges and benefits of this situation? Running two sites using the same content can cause duplicate content issues which may lead to the sites being depressed in the search results. If they are set up improperly the redirects can also lead to search ranking issues. From a user standpoint some people don't trust sites that redirect them to another location. I would break these two domains into distinct sites.
