Download a file to a Mac? - 10/15/2009 12:53:53
I have a client who needs to download an MP3 file from a private link on my website. She's on a Mac and can't seem to figure out how to download the file. She can play the file by clicking on the link, but doesn't know how to download it. Apparently it doesn't work the same way on a Mac as on a PC, where you would just right-click and select "Save link as..." or whatever. She said something about going through the control panel of her computer but it's not active and that the save option is greyed out. The file is 20MB - too big to email. I'm at a loss to advise her how to get the file through the website.

Does anyone here know how she can download the file through a webpage link? Is there another way I could make the file available to her? The file is private and personal, so I wouldn't want to post it in a public area.

Thanks very much for any help I can get about this.

I've not use a Mac in decades... but from what I've read if they HOLD the button on the link a pop-up window will display and then can then download. Otherwise, I use http://yousendit.com to transfer larger files to folks.

Thanks a million, Brian! I wasn't aware of that service. Brilliant idea! I'll try it if we can't get the download to work. :)

Just FYI, on a Mac there is no "right-click"

But if you CTRL+click it will do the same thing...

Aaahhhh, I didn't know that. I'm not sure if my client knew that or not, but they were able to grab a copy of it by playing it in place and recording it, from what they told me. But thanks; I'll keep that in mind for the next time I have a client who uses a Mac. :)

That looks very cool! Thanks, Dave. I've forwarded the link to my client. :)
