Google Webmaster tools - 10/15/2009 20:19:25
Hello
I'm trying to improve my results with Google and just signed up for Webmaster tools.
The first report I got was:
HTTP - In Sitemaps - Not followed - Not found - Restricted by robots.txt - Timed out - Unreachable
What does this mean and Is there a simple cure for this problem?
Does Restricted by robots.txt mean that I have the wrong line that is not allowing Google to access?
Is having a site map an important feature to improve Google results.
Thanks
Frank

I would start by checking your robots.txt file as it looks like you have a line in there that's blocking spidering.

Ideally you do need a site map that Google can read, especially if you don't have a sensible structure where each page can be spidered to all the other pages. It needs to be in XML format but there are full instructions on Google how to do it.

Ah yes thank you I think I solved the 404 problem.
I never paid much attention to the publish site page and found several stat conflicts and deleted them
But every page on the local and remote sites is marked unmatched.--years of neglect I guess.
I presume I need to publish the local site (which is now cleaned up ) and somehow remove all the excess files on the remote site.
The help screen sez Select and publish or synchronize the files as required.
What does that mean? Do I have to do that manually comparing local to remote?

Thanks
Frank

Can I just delete all the files on remote and then publish local to remote?
Thank you

It has been a long time, but as I recall you can select whether to "update" or "overwrite" your remote web... if you update it will not remove unused files... overwriting is supposed to.

I seem to remember having to clean up some files by hand anyway... since it didn't always do the best job automatically.

Worst case, yes you should be able to delete the remote files and republish the revamped web.
