Anyone using Windows 7? - 10/30/2009 9:28:44
The title says it all really, I dithered a lot about getting the initial cut price offerings but in the end decided to wait for the first SP version to be released. XP is fine for me at the moment - how about you guys?

The few that I talked to about Win 7 that use it, seem to like it. No problems so far, but they are not power users like you guys. The video forums that I visit have some Win 7 users and they seem to be satisfied. Me...I will wait till first service pack before purchasing Win 7.

Well, that is a good testimonial.

I installed one of the developer versions on my laptop awhile ago just to test it out. Even being in beta, it seemed to run without an issue. Windows 7 seems like Vista without UAC bugging you every time you try to do something. I've seen sooo many different reviews/benchmarks regarding Windows 7. I think it is mostly hyped up, just like Vista was. Windows 7 doesn't offer anything that I would be dying to have. What's the big deal? Just because it is new? Microsoft has such few features to display, that it considers IE 8 as a "feature" of Windows 7. The biggest thing Microsoft needs to do with a new OS, is improve the security. I'm not talking about the protection of the core (new security feature in Win 7), I'm talking about the easy ability for the average user to completely bloat their computer with spyware/adware within minutes of normal web browsing. Windows has gotten so bad, that it has become common for people to install anti-malware type programs. Maybe if Microsoft figured out what the bottom line problems were, and corrected those, I would be excited to use Windows 7.

I'll have to check that one out. All of my comments are completely based on the home user. Do you have anymore info about Server 2008 and Win 7?

As I said, I can't really comment on what it's like to use, as I haven't used it. As Bobby said though, what would really be useful (and is badly needed) is preventing the spyware/adware invasion you can get simply going online. When I first switched to Vista, for a couple of days before I'd got all my data from my old laptop copied over to the new one I decided to "trust" Vista and the Windows firewall and Windows Defender, just as an experiment. Result? Umpteen spyware/adware programs and a trojan, and I very quickly installed my usual AV/firewall combo and anti-malware software. The only TV advert I can recall seeing recently for Windows 7 (there may be others, but that's the only one I've seen on TV, though I've seen other ads online and in the trade press) features a MS user excited because he can view two apps side by side on the same screen. Your average user's probably going to get most of their info from TV ads though (unless they have geeky persuasions, in which case they may read the more consumer oriented web mags), or maybe from the salesperson in-store. The other main impression I've got of Windows 7 from the other ads I've seen is that it starts up much faster than Vista (but I guess you couldn't get much slower!). From a business point of view it strikes me though that if your major selling points for your wonderful new product are that you can view two different things on the screen, IE8 (aka. "wow, it ever comes with a web browser, just like the last one we made!") and it starts up faster than the last monstrosity you created (aka "we're trying to fix the mess we made of the last one"), then you really should be worrying about your business model and product. Yeah, so I've never been a great fan of MS, though I concede that MS has been largely responsible in recent years for bringing computers and the web to the masses, and ensuring that one computer can talk to the next and that software you have on your own computer's by and large gonna work on your cousin's computer in Australia. MS may be the spawn of Satan, but they do have some redeeming qualities. As Bobby said though, there's nothing I've heard about Windows 7 that's gonna make me want to rush out and buy it. Of the 3 major selling points I've seen Windows 7 advertised using, if I want a speedy start-up (5 seconds), I switch to my Linux laptop, I have a browser way better than IE, and if I want to compare two documents (web pages, scripts etc.) I use one of the many file comparison utilities, or good old Alt and tab.

I'll stick with Vista until I purchase a new system. Vista is not anything to brag about but at least it has proven stable for me. My hardware, network and all software work fine. It does what I need so I have no desire to spend money on a OS that may or may not load a few seconds faster and cause me to reformat and do a complete reinstall. You could give me Win 7 and I wouldn't install it. My theory is if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

The other main impression I've got of Windows 7 from the other ads I've seen is that it starts up much faster than Vista (but I guess you couldn't get much slower!). - Even though it boots faster (3 seconds faster than XP (yet 2 seconds slower than XP when shutting down so you really only save 1 second according to this test) and another that shows Win 7 is 4 seconds faster booting up over XP) the couple seconds we save booting up, isn't nearly worth the price tag. Even if Microsoft gave this update out for free, I still wouldn't install it. XP is now a solid system. It has been tested, used for years, and many companies rely on it. New isn't always a bad thing, but when Microsoft slaps their name behind it, it really scares me. The features could have been added into XP as a Service Pack 4 or something. The biggest thing Microsoft needs to do with their next OS, is provide reliability. I want to know that my computer is going to be just as fast today, as it will be in a week/month/year after I use it. I want to know that with proper anti-virus, I won't ever have to worry about having to reinstall Windows - there shouldn't even be an option for a Repair Install. I recently ran a test regarding XP on a laptop. I paid attention to the time it took to do certain tasks such as having the menu popup when you right-clicking on a file, or the time it takes to load the Control Panel. After using the computer for over a week, there was a significant increase in the time it would take to perform these tasks. Microsoft's operating systems act like a car's engine, in the sense you need to replace the oil to keep the engine running. The only problem is that there's no place to change the oil with Windows, we need to completely re-install/replace it to get that initial speed again.
