Tickers...Client Wants Them - 11/3/2009 15:14:26
I manage a site for a school system. The boss wants a ticker/marquee on the site. I have tried a few but they all make the site look crappy. I am trying to talk them to consider doing away with the video graphic and go with a photo fade instead. I have not heard a decision yet. If the client sticks with her ticker idea does anyone have any suggestions? The site is at www.sccboe.org

Personally, I'd try and persuade them the photo fade idea might be a better one. I had a similar problem with a site I did last year. The client wanted a large banner scrolling, which in my opinion completely ruined the site. We came to a compromise in the end with a bit of an animation effect on the text rather than scrolling, which still isn't ideal, but is much more in keeping with the site.

It might also be worth mentioning the accessibility aspect of having a ticker/marquee as well. If the marquee has text, it has obvious accessibility problems for those who are visually impaired and using screen-readers, etc. They can also be a problem for those with low vision though, or a very limited visual field, and those using page magnification, and those with learning or attention problems often struggle with moving objects on screen. Going for the accessibility aspect may have more of a impact with it being a school, in theory - though it doesn't always work. I work in local government, and about three years ago when I went back to work after a long spell of sickness absence I was invited to meet with the head of IT when he heard about my interest in web accessibility. In local government we're supposed to comply with accessibility guidelines, but our site's still got a number of problems. The major one (with thankfully now has finally gone) was a scrolling news box, which the head of IT described as "cool" *rolls eyes*. Thankfully he's gone now, and so has the scrolling news box.

Sometimes, even if the good taste argument doesn't work with clients, raising any accessibility/usability issues might sway them.

The only way I have seen it done well is with a Flash movie...

It kind of depends on how much information needs to be displayed, and how much of it needs to be displayed at any given time for the entire thing to make sense.

Where were you planning to insert the marquee? Using that standard marquee, it looks like it may fit well next to the navigation, on the far right side, right of the "Links" item.

Flash is usually the best way to have a smooth scrolling marquee.

You can have it setup so it reads from a txt/xml file, so the client can update the information on the marquee by editing a simple file.

womble...I have been making your case with the client. The site is successful and is heavily used. The departments do a good job of keeping it updated. Hopefully common sense will win out but some folks believe a site should have a lot of moving parts...it's cool they say.

BD....The main problem with putting a ticker to the right of links is that it would not show up except on high resolution screens.

I have a flash scroller that uses an XML file and I tried using it on the right column. I hated it as well.

So far we seem to all agree here...now if the client will come around.

The client is never right... but you can't let them know.

Exactly, I'm going to end up having to do it. If the client would have wanted this when the site was built it would have been much easier to fit seamlessly into the site.

- It would fit within a 1024x768 window, the most commonly used resolution. Not sure what your average user is using to view the website, so it really depends on your specific situation.

We usually use 1024x768 as the standard size for our pages since it is the most common resolution.

Resolution doesn't mean much if people don't have their browsers maximised though...

I still like the argument that it would be gaudy.

Epilepsy inducing is a great argument.
