Marquee or Alt - 11/14/2009 15:01:34
Hello everyone, I have a client that request having a Marquee on his website. He updates it weekly and has become time consuming for me. He posts upcoming events and news on it. Is there a site I can can some type of script or service that will allow his to change this at his leisure remotely?

Have a look at Snippetmaster. SnippetMaster is a content editing tool for website owners or designers who want a very easy, quick, and visual way to edit pre-defined areas on any web page, through any browser, without messing up the rest of the web page. Don't know if it will work for a marquee but have a look. I have installed this on a website that allows my client to make changes to a page.

Yep, I'd suggest Snippetmaster too. I've been using it on client sites for about three years now with no problems. If it doesn't work with marquees, you could always show him how to toggle between the WYSIWYG and code views in Snippetmaster and which code to edit. Snippetmaster works with all (X)HTML elements though as far as I know. I suggested possibly toggling between WYSIWYG and code views though because a couple of weeks ago I had a client who updates his site with Snippetmaster, and has been doing so for the last eighteen months or so without any problems who was trying to add in some external links to a page. I think the problem was most likely that I'd originally set up the links as an unordered list, and it wasn't letting him simply press 'enter' to add in a new line and add a link as another list item. I just explained to him how to toggle between the two views though (this was on the phone, with both of us with the page up infront of us) and how to edit between the <a> tags, and he was fine. If your client's just going to be using a marquee using the <marquee> tag though, it shouldn't be a problem. Using Snippetmaster though, in the configuration section you'd have to set it to so it's not in 'strict' mode otherwise it only allows the use of valid (X)HTML tags, and the <marquee> tag's a non-standard HTML tag which isn't supported by all browsers. If your client's fixed on the idea of having a marquee though, to get it working across all browsers, you'd be better using a script for producing a marquee effect (places like Dynamic Drive usually have various javascript ones available). If you had a script that produced a marquee from a HTML file that had the desired text in it, it'd still be possible to use something like Snippetmaster to edit it, as you can allow whole files to be edited. The other option would be to set up a simple database with an input form where the client could simply type the text he wants for his marquee, and then output the marquee text from the database. With a database setup you could even set it up so your client could have multiple 'news' messages and randomly display one of them on the marquee. (Personally though I'd probably be trying to dissuade the client from using a naff marquee and sticking to something that doesn't move, but that's just me.
