Corrupt FP extensions - 12/21/2001 9:11:38
All,

I read over and over again that the FP Extensions may be corrupt and they need to be re-installed. Soooooooooo,

1. Why does this continue to happen?
2. What can be done to limit the problem?
3. Is it something we users are doing?

Just thought I'd ask.

Thanks

Smitty

The FP Extensions should not get corrupt often.
1) Are you getting all the patches that are availble?
2) Are you using FTP to publish. Depending on your design FTP may not get all the files.

Erin,

My server sits behind me, I'm self hosting, mistake, possibly. I will be working on the site live from my development computer. Should, or will I have the same problems?

Thanks

No mistake if you are an experienced server admin?

Opinions differ, but I can not imagine working on a site "live". It will slow down the response for your visitors, increase the changes for losing edits, etc.

Depends - What is the server? Processor speed, RAM, etc. What is the connection to the 'Net? Anything less than a T1 is way too slow. (Actually, a T1 is too slow, but...)

Is it Windoze, Linux, Unix?

Gil,

I could turn around and use the web server and work on the site from the same place it's hosted, that should be quicker than a T1.

I'm not an expert sysadmin, but I some of the books.

Other post have mentioned that open the site live and work on it like that, don't use FTP, etc. What's the best way?

Oh, I have a basic DSL line.
Thanks

I wasn't speaking about you working on the site - I was reffering to those visiting.

Everyone has an opinion on this. I NEVER!!!! work "live". It just doesn't make any sense. FTP is fine IF you never FTP files with FP "bots".

DSL is great for accessing the web, but very slow for a server.

Can you make a suggetion for how this should be set up my IT guru from work suggested, and I bought what he said. He keeps about 250 machines up and running at work.

Web server is where all of the pages will be. 350Mhz, 128 ram, 30 gig IDE, Windows Advance Server.

SQL server is only to handle the Database, 850MHz, 128 ram, 30 gig IDE, Windows SQL 7.0 server.

Workstation, 866MHz, 128 ram, 20 gig, Windows Professional, doing all the pointless stuff.

The webserver is linked though a hub to the DSL router to the DSL box. SQL is though the Hub to the web server, Work station is though the hub to the router, to the DSL box.

I'm not a tech kinda guy, I'm more of an Idea/sales guy.

Is this a good setup to begin with that won't blow up the first time it's asked to perform some miricle like "work".

Thanks

Increase RAM to at least 256, 512 is better.

Increase RAM to at least 512 - 1024 would be best.

sounds good

The HUB is going to slow things down a bit - I'd go for a switch instead.

If you expect more than a couple (1 or 2) visitors at any one time the DSL is not going to handle it very well.

Thanks Gil,

I'm off to buy more memory.

I thought DSL was supposed to be the cat's meow, fast, always on.

What's the hot setup for when I can afford it?

Thanks

Smitty

If self web hosting is a money tree, I'd cut mine down.

Smitty, sorry me again...I have to ask you...what kind of traffic are you planning on? There are some areas that could cause you some probs here...

Are you running SQL7 now? I mentioned this before, but I don't think thats enough machine for that app. If a lot of things are fed by that server....

I don't know, looks shaky, if you get busy get a whole new one here and use this for a backup...speaking of that is there backups for two servers, you mentioned mirroring...if it's an important site then crash-it and test your reaction time. Oh and also, my extensions never crash....

All this to change a number into a name...

Caywind,
Thanks for the feed back.
expected traffic, lots I hope, don't we all. I really plan on small exponetial growth, due to some of my marketing ploys. I will probaly see intermitted hits, the idea is a address book on the web. I look forward to your view of it as well. so there will be limited queries by the users, only posting and updateing of records.

My SQL server will be done today, SQL is the only thing running on it. I'm not sure of how SQl will run on it as I have not loaded the database. that should be done in a week or two.

Backup, what backup? That has yet to be figured out. I will be doing, software, database backups, but the server backup needs to be worked out. I can't afford to host due to the SQL requirement, I looked at VIA and it's almost $100 a month, for SSL, SQL.

I'll struggle though this I guess and fix it when I get the money.

Thanks "Will work or host for server."

Smitty

Thank you all I found a hosting site, though this board that charges only $79.00 a year and SQL for another $25. Now I can spend time regrowing the hair I lost due to self inflected worries.

Thanks All, I will be keeping one machine running as a web/SQL tester, that way I can continue to learn and upgrade the site check for functions.

Thanks again.

Hey Smitty, cool, I was facing that same choice a while back and decided to outsource the web-hosting. I'll tell you what else, when I break something or something breaks on it's own They don't e-mail to tell me that they recieved my plea for help. They e-mail me to tell me that they looked at it, found, and fixed it! Sounds like you got a great rate. better than mine???
