maybole -> Why does NS 4.7 crash on my homepage? (12/21/2001 16:41:20)

I've created a 900 page website for a small town in Scotland using FrontPage. But in the last several weeks I've noticed that Netscape 4.7 crashes on the homepage at www.maybole.org . NS6.2 works fine. Can anyone tell me what part of the code is bad here? Thanks

You have soem stuff there that NN does not like - such as table border styles (eg border-collapse) and table/cell heights. They do not ususally cause it to crash completely but it would be worth removing them to see if it helps. It is crashing NN for me too.

I am sorry I cannot help more - that is a wonderful site - it really draws you in, I just spent ages happily poking around in it and I am not even remotely the target audience. I will go back and look at more again too - I WANT TO GO TO MAYBOLE and I cannot understand how I never heard of it until now!! Absolutely fascinating stuff, truly wonderful images and easily one of the best sites of its kind I have ever seen. Great job, and what a job it must be!

Theres nothing that stands out here either.
Perhaps some of the styles?

It doesnt appear to be the javascript near the base of the page, I removed that and it still crashed.

It may be trial and error, removing code till it doesnt crash, to narrow down which part causes it.

WOW that was a fast crash! I used NN4.5 and it crashed in about 2 seconds.

Unfortunately I also could not see anything looking at the source with IE to suggest a problem.

The good news is: I disabled javascript for NN4.5 and the page loaded fine. So that might be the place to start looking.

Katherine,

Any good suggestions for easily eliminating the border-collapse?
As much as I know the border-collapse should not be there, it is put there by default in FP2002 every time a table is created. I have done what I know how to change that, but so far no joy.

I know not near enough about styles, but I do know I refuse to stop using FP or to stop building tables, so I take my chances. So far, I've not had any one tell me a site was not viewable in NN, and I just don't know how to get rid of that every time I build a table. Maybe I should never have upgraded. *sigh*

Gosh, I was not aware of that - that alone would almost put me off getting FP2002. What a pain.

The real reason I would have a problem with it is not that it is not supported well (and it is supported only by IE 5.5+) but that it throws such unecessary additional HTML into a page. Even if it were supported it is something you would probably only use occasionally.

Why do MS keep doing that?

Here is an explanation of what it is supposed to do: http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-CSS2/tables.html#collapsing-borders which, frankly, makes it about as clear as mud to me.

After looking at the code I am definitely not upgrading. There is tons of stuff not compatible with nn4.x . Why don't you run it through net mechanic or one of the other services and it will tell you what is compatible and what is not.

Success!:-)At least for now! I changed quite a bit of the page formatting and kept testing it in NS4.7 until it finally worked. Unfortunately I can't tell you what part of the formating was causing NS 4.7 to crash because I made so many changes. In the last set of changes however I do believe I changed a small bit of the javascript at the bottom of the page so that may have been the problem. I did run it through netmechanic which came back with lots of errors and incompatiblity problems and still does. The problem is that there are too many reported problems to know which one was crashing NS 4.7. This page was the only one in my website that had this problem but being the home page it was obviously not good. I have been using FP2002 without problems for several months now and have found the ability to publish a single page very useful. Since the site has 900 pages republishing one page takes seconds verus about 15 minutes publishing under FP2000. To fix the NS 4.7 problem I was able to quickly republish my Home page quite a few times and then test it each time. I change my Home page about once a week with new items so I may be back again if I have more problems. Thanks to all who responded to my post. You've all been very helpful.

I was not aware of that compatibility issue. Hmm, and forcing NN/IE compatibility doesn't force the tables to be written without the collapsing borders code?
