Site make-over...ideas? - 12/28/2001 16:53:14
Hi all. I just revamped a site and I would love to get suggestions or ideas on how to make it better.

Thanks!

I think it looks great! The only problem as far as I'm concerned is that the tiny little Garamond-fonted text in the left column at the bottom is awfully hard to read. Aside from that, it's a very nice site.

Hi. Nice job.

I saw 2 things worth mentioning (I didn't look at all the pages).

1) on the about page I got a side-to-side scroll. It wasn't huge but side-to-side scrolls are always a drag.

2) IMHO when I see a company's logo on their website I think it should link back home. I realize there is a home button in your navbar so maybe that's the way you want to leave it.

This is just MHO.

This is a nice site. Good graphics, good contnet. I would absolutely love to see something on the right side of the home page under "available space." Maybe a list of "current shops" or the like. Why so much blank space at the bottom of About? Nice and clean. Easy to see, easy to navigate. Great.

Hello,

Make sure you set your page's background to white, not default like you have now.

Users not using Windows colors on their browsers will see a site quite different than the one that is there now. Look at this screenshot:

There is
NO
reason to set a bgcolor
"UNLESS"
you are setting
ALL
the BODY attributes (link, alink, vlink, text)! The rule is ALL or NONE - you have none, which is correct.

Hi Gil,
That may be true but I dont agree that it is all or none. Not setting link, vlink, etc wont completely ruin a page.

Not setting the bg can. He's not using css to control anything so better safe than sorry.

Your right, he should set them all but at least set the bg so you dont get that screenshot. Just because Yahoo wont, doesnt mean we shouldnt.

Anyway- Troy

Not setting anything will not "completely ruin a page" either, it will only effect people who set a bgcolor for thier browser without thinking about how it will effect the look of 'some' pages.

"Being safe" is following the rules. The rule is "none or all", period.

Yahoo follows the rules.

If someone desires a different bgcolor than the site developer sets they should use a personal style sheet, not set the browser bgcolor to a color.

I'm sorry Troy, but I stick by my earlier post - setting one attribute and not all is just sloppy coding! and there is no excuse for it.

Hi Gil,
Dont be sorry. I completely agree. Im one of those guys who sets his browser option to a light shade of grey to make it easier on my eyes.
I spend most of my time at Yahoo who doesnt define their bg. You are correct about the coding although I think sloppy is a poor choice of words.

I havent seen a site yet that had perfect coding. The web is full of pages with javascript staments missing colons and directories missing the trailing slash. Will it work...yes, but thats what I would call sloppy coding.

Anyway.. Nice talkin with ya:)
