I've always wondered: - 12/28/2001 20:34:33
1) What would it take for me to get MY OWN SERVER? 2) What would it take for me to make my own file extension, i.e. .com, .net, .cc, etc.? (I want to make the webpage that I have listed, but don't know how to create a .777 file...) I know this!

To have your own server just takes Money! .com, .net, etc are not file extensions, they are domain extensions and you have to buy those, not create them. Gene White http://www.gwhitedesign.com

go to www.godaddy.com, spend $8.95/ year for the domain, $9.95/ month for hosting. Das'all. -Ray www.raypasnen.com "I was being paid to do what I loved and there's no better gig on earth than that..." -Stephen King, Bag of Bones

Right, yes, well, I know how to get a .net, .com, .news, or any of the other EXISTING extensions. But how do I create my own? I know this!

That is an interesting question. Most countries have their own extensions, such as .ca and .zb. I would like to create my own server extension, like .rog... (Then, with server space, you could create a domain with the names that have been long taken, like pestilence.com and pestilence.net, which I couldn't get. To have www.pestilence.rog would be nice. Of course, as is the way of the world, you'll end up having to pay SOMEBODY for it. Semper Fidelis

About the server, any computer can serve up web pages, I found that out. Now for the bad news, your gonna need more money than GOD to pull it off, safely, reliably, securely, and than what. You will have spent thousands on equipment, books, asprin. Please read some of my post in the server section. Ask yourself will it save me more than the $10-$15 a month in trouble. Hard to compare with whats avalible for the money. Good luck Smitty John A. Smith sorryiforgot.com hairschool.org If you have to ask "Who's the man?" Your probaly not him.

demi-god; Blatchford: "I'm a strict determinist, all our actions are the resultant actions and reactions starting with the big bang (never mind that we have no idea who/what pulled the trigger on that "bang" thingamabob.)" Chesterton: "If you don't believe the will is free, it would be unreasonable to thank someone for passing you the mustard." ******************** Just yankin your chain lady. As far as the server thing goes; I'm not sure if you can still do it but companies used to give you a server with apache on it and charge you a monthly fee for the upkeep (service plan) of it. It wasn't too bad really but I'm not sure if anyone does that anymore or not. Do a search on google..."free apache servers" and see if you come up with anything or not.

I am not sure what you mean by "server extensions"? - if you are talking about the TLD's (top level domains) IE: .COM, NET, .MIL, .ORG, etc., they are decided on by ICANN. Gil Harvey The Host Factory Resellers are our Specialty

Bepestilence, Even if you found a way to do it you wouldn't go anywhere because you wouldn't be on any domain servers. It would be like living in a town with no street name or address. No one could find you! Paula

Well, you could always make some little nothing doorway type pages and load them on free servers, i.e. GeoCities et al, and make them link to you own server. That way Google and others would pick up on your doorway pages. I guess that's feasible? *************** Rams 35--Indianapolis 14, 7 minutes into the third 1/4. Wahoo!

I suppose so. Well, is not a domain and the extension nothing but a file name? Furthmore, who says ALL websites have to be World Wide Web? Why not: http://rog.bpestilence.net? I could see it now. Rogue net. Kinda catchy. Semper Fidelis

No, it's not a file name at all. quote: Furthmore, who says ALL websites have to be World Wide Web?
I wasn't aware of anyone saying that. There are plenty of sites that do not use the WWW as a third level domain. Gil Harvey The Host Factory Resellers are our Specialty

"Hence the point of the original post, making your own server." No, the original post was: "What would it take for me to make my own file extension, i.e. .com, .net, .cc, et" The idea of making your own extension has nothing to do with having your own server. The only servers that count are the DNS servers that talk to each other within the established DNS hierarchy and your extension doesn't get on there unless ICANN approves it. Also has nothing to do with the World Wide Web. Some of us on this forum were on the internet before the WWW existed. In the world of internet WWW is just a kid. Bpestilence. Your suggestion of http://rog.bpestilence.net is just doing it the old way using a subdomain. The world of DNS as explained by Cisco: http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/iaabu/cddm/cddm111/adguide/dns.htm#xtocid184682 Paula

Actually, if you have a small LAN, you can set up DNS fairly easily and have any name you choose. this is a name that can't be seen on the internet.... All this to change a number into a name...
