Slices or Hotspots on complex graphic image - 1/2/2002 8:08:17
I want to create an opening page with an editable large graphic design, hyperlinking to perhaps 20 pages - customer's request.
Any advice on construction of the image would be most welcome.
Should I make individual layers and hyperlink to identifiable components on each layer or should I use hotspots on the finished graphic image?
I can use MS Word, Serif Draw Plus, Serif Page Plus and MS Image Composer to make and/or edit images.

If the areas/hotspots are not rectangular, you'll want to create an imagemap from the finished image, and create hotspots for the different links. (ImageMaps allow you to select circular, rectangular, or polygonal shapes for hotspots as opposed to "slicing" which gives you rectangular sections placed side by side in a table).

You can use FrontPage to create the imagemap.

You can use FP to make the image map but I recently found a very nice free image map maker that I like a lot - you can do everything on one screen, easily add alt text and even javascript events.

It's here: http://home.swipnet.se/~w-54059/winproducts.htm

While you are there grab the font map utility too - I don't know what I ever did without it.

The only concern I'd have is if the image is going to be so big it will take a long time to load. If you've got that many hotspots it must be fairly big. You might want to consider slicing it up into small parts so it will load faster.

Thanks to all for the comments and suggestions. I am experimenting with various image mapping things that seem to work - will know better after gaining first-hand experience.

Nobody commented on which package I should use to draw the images I want to create :o(

Any advice here?

Ralph

From the point of view of slicing or image mapping it really makes no difference what program you use to create the image.

I think that is why nobody commented on it. The best program to use to create the image is probably the one you are most comfortable with.
