server error on save - ARRRGGGHHH! - 1/4/2002 15:55:28
Happy New Year!
I recently saved all my files from my harddrive to CD and formated my harddrive. It was acting crazy.
I tried to make my update to my site and I make the changes and try to save and get this error:

Server error: Cannot open file
"C:\\WEBSHARE\WWWROOT\calvary\_vti_pvt\service.lck" for writing

All of my files became read only when I backed them up on CD, I have changed most of them back including the above file. So what is this asking for?
The file has a LCK extension and is 0KB in size. What's up with that?

All files have been unchecked from Read Only. How do you check to see if FP EXT are installed and running?
They were running before I formatted my hd. So they still should be running and installed.

I have also used the "repair FP" option that FP gives you when you ask to reinstall it.

I have done what MS suggests in their support pages, the following is what was suggested:

FP2000: Error Message Saving Changes to Web: Cannot Open File ...\_vti_pvt\Service.lck for Writing (Q303255)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The information in this article applies to:

Microsoft FrontPage 2000

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
When you attempt to save changes made to a Web on your hard disk, you may receive an error message similar to the following:
Cannot open file ...\_vti_pvt\service.lck for writing.
CAUSE
This behavior occurs if the Web was copied from CD-ROM so that all .lck files were marked as read-only.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this and other issues with read-only files, follow these steps:
Right-click Start , and then click Explore .
NOTE : Because there are several versions of Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, please consult your product documentation to complete these steps.

On the Tools menu, click Folder Options .

On the View tab, click to select the Show hidden files and folders check box, and then click to clear the Hide file extension for known file types check box.

Click OK .

In the Folders list, double-click the folder that contains your Web.

Double-click the _vti_pvt folder.

Delete any files that end with .lck.

Right-click the Service file, and then click Properties .

Click to clear the Read Only check box, and then click OK .

Right-click the Services file, and then click Properties .

Click to clear the Read Only check box, and then click OK .

Repeat these steps for any subwebs.

I just reinstalled FP and it did not help.
Same problem. Please help
Is there anything that I can punch around here?

I have also tried to open a new web and transfer the files to the new web and I get the same error.

Any help would be huge. I'm a newbie so please answer in simple terms.

Thanks
Jim

if you havn't already done so copy all the files off the cd to the HD then reset the permissions through explorer. there's a possibility you may have to take ownership of the directory structure. i didn't see where you mentioned the OS but if it's w2k the sids would have been blown away when you did the reformat. then recheck to see if the read ownly attribute has been removed.

anything else, post back.

I'm using Win98. I had copied all the files back to my Hard drive and changed the permissions back also. Still, having the same problem.

What do you mean by "take ownership of the directory structure"?

Anything else that might help????
