Domain Name Renewals - 1/10/2002 19:12:05
I was wondering if anyone would care to comment about buydomains.com. I have used Verisign in the past and had no problems with my registers (service was slow however) but have recieved offers from buydomains.com to renew at about 1/2 of the price that Versign gets. Anyone know of what the "catch" is >

I would second Linda on www.godaddy.com - I very much doubt they can be beaten on price and of the 4 or 5 different registration outfits I have used they have easily the best interface for managing domains. Just a point - if you want to tranfer a domain to another registration company you would be best doing it at least a month before it comes due for renewal. I transferred a domain last Fall - just so that I'd never have to deal with Versign again. The cost savings were a bonus. And do follow Abbeyvet's advice - contact your new registrar well before the renewal date.

Related question - when your domain name comes up for renewal, do you get notified automatically? I'm not sure when mine's due. I'd hate to find that enborne.com had suddenly disappeared! Jeff. Enborne Computing http://www.enborne.com

I would like to know the answer to that question too. A case in point: The city of Eugene, Oregon apparently was not notified when their domain name expired and some porn site grabbed it.

Notifying me that it was renewal time (i.e. send more money) was the one thing that Verisign was good at. My new registrar has promised the same service but to make sure I've set a reminder in Outlook. Cheers

http://budgetregister.com/ are not ICANN accredited registrars, they are resellers for Tucows. They buy the domains for $10 (.com, .org and .net) and resell at whatever price they like. More or less anyone can sign up to be a Tucows reseller at www.opensrs.com Not a thing wrong with that of course. Your domain will actually be registered by Tucows and should any of the resellers go belly up you are protected by that. However even the wholesale prices charged by OpenSRS are more than the retail prices at www.godaddy.com I have no idea how GoDaddy do what they do at such a low price but nor do I care as the service is excellent - well, the interface anyway, everything has always worked so smoothly I never had occasion to look for support - they do send reminders and it is all at the lowest price available anywhere.
