UK Based hosting co. - 1/23/2002 6:04:36
Hi! I've3 been with a UK host for a ayear and I'm not impressed by the service I'm getting so I'm considering a switch.

I'd prefer a UK host, FPXtensions, ASP support

Anyone any recommendations?

Hi-
I'm in London, and my host is in the USA. I looked at UK hosts, what they had to offer, and their prices. I came to the conclusion that US hosts are at least as good (and probably better), and their prices are about ONE TENTH of UK prices. I don't know why this is. But I'm more than happy with my US hosts (PARCOM.NET et al). The only disadvantage that I've found is the time difference on things like forums (about 8 hours), but I'm sure that I can find a way to overcome this.
On a world-wide web, why do you think you need a UK host? There's a plethora of excellent services 'out there'.

Why a UK host?

Well, I don't want to be phoning the USA for support. That could get expensive and user entering the site from the UK will get a slower connection time/ downlaod time. Also, its harder to get good listings on UK search engines when you're hosted in the US.

Hi, yes the cost of support phone calls is certainly a factor. I use www.webtapestry.net
who are fair and helpful. They have W2k hosting with FP extensions, asp, databases etc.

A useful site for host selection based on your criteria is www.webhostingguide.co.uk; also check their forum for who to avoid!

Cheers,
Caz

The reason UK hosts are more expensive, is because local calls in teh UK are not free. ALL phone access is toll-based, and therefore internet access for ISP's is proportionately more expensive.

At least this is what I am told by Darlin' Bri...

I am in Ireland and was with both UK and Irish based hosts at various times but now most of the sites I have anything to do with are hosted in the US. Some where clients have their own arrangements are still this side of the pond.

I can see your point about calls but there is one thing you may be forgetting - support calls are only expensive if you have to make them. If you have a good reliable host who answers emails promptly then that is very very rarely.

I have found that the sites I have hosted in Ireland cost me more in total in phone calls to support than those that are in the US, even though I have perhaps 5 times as many in the US.

Actually phoning the US in the evening has become relatively inexpensive anyway, though it is very rare for me to call at all at least when I do our cheap rate calls coincide with the working day in the US>
