Will this work? - 1/23/2002 11:59:23
I have a client who would like me to update her contact information. Problem is her web site was not designed with FrontPage. The solution I have come up with is to import her site make the change in FrontPage...have her contact her Web Hosting company who offers FrontPage Extensions and have them set up her account for FrontPage. I don't know if I am going about this the right way? I don't want to screw up the rest of her site in the meanwhile! She eventually wants me to redesign the whole site so I'd like to not screw up her site making one change. Anyone with an opinion on this please let me know! Thanks so much Rita

Rita, hey!

you don't need a server with FPXtensions just to update contact details unless you are using some kind of include bot.

On the other hand if its contact details regarding sending forms you're probably better just finding an asp script of CGI script to use.

I work on a site called www.leisure-ideas.com - designed in FP but now server XTensions. I don't have problems with forms no that I use ASP.

In either case you should be able to import and publish via ftp no problem.

I've never done this but my advice would be to not rock the boat. If the change is a simple html email address or something textual like that, I'd make it, ftp the page back out there and leave well enough alone.

Use FP to develop the new site.

I would simply download the contact file, edit and re-upload using ftp.

Then, if you want to have the host install FrontPage extensions, have them do it, then "Publish" from the server back to your hard drive.

If they have a cgi-bin with scripts in it (which they probably do), keep these separate and do NOT publish them the next time you publish back to the server. You could place them in a subweb, but I'd be leary of causing problems with the scripts if you did that after the fact. Just keep that folder separate (don't publish it) and you should be fine.
