text w/graphic ? - 1/26/2002 13:08:37
I'm just a beginner on FP and understand the basics well enough to know FP does not allow me to create the graphics I want. Can you recommend a good program to allow me to make graphics and graphics w/text. I created a graphic w/text in publisher and cut and pasted it in FP, but the text was somewhat blurry. I'd appreciate your help. Thanks!!

There are a few things to keep in mind when creating graphics with text, the most important being to save the image in .gif format to keep the text clean. This format limits you to 256 colors, which can be a problem if you're adding text to an original .jpg or .tif image as the reduction in colors can make things look a bit odd. In such a case, experiment with the two formats, but keep in mind that the more you edit, save, open and edit a .jpg, the more the image degrades. Creating a logo or rollover link with text? Definitely save it as a .gif.

As for software, try PaintShopPro by JASC. You can download a free trial at www.jasc.com. It does about 90% what Photoshop does, for less than 20% the cost. The learning curve isn't as steep either.

Hello,

You can pretty much rely on use jpg's for pictures and images with gradients or blends. Use gif's for images with few colors and typically headers and such although it is not set in stone. It really depends on the graphic.

I agree with Michael that PaintShop Pro would be a good place to start, especially for beginers. I dont agree that it can do 90% of what Photoshop can do... matter of fact I think its closer to about 10% but I'm just a beloved Photoshop user.

That being said, Michael is correct, the Photoshop learning curve is very steep..

If you have a version of FrontPage earlier than 2002 then you probably have an image editor on the second disc - Image Composer. It is a good image editor, easy to learn and well capable of doing what you need.

Thanks to all for your helpful ideas which I will try/consider as soon as I can. Unfortunately my edition of FP2000 was bundled with office professional (or something like that) and there is no image composer disk. Thanks!
