Guest -> Thumbnails do not link to file. (7/14/2001 18:50:00)

I uploaded my carefully crafted Front Page web page up to my server only to discover that when I click on the thumbnails I get a "Page cannot be found" message. This is a real bummer. Everything worked fine when I previewed them in the NetScape and Internet Explorer browsers. Can anyone help? P.S. I am a beginner at all of this, so please keep it real simple. Thanks.

In FP when you right click on the thumbnail > Hyperlink Properties...where does it say the pic is linked to?

If you could post your url we could perhaps see what is going on.

It says that it's in another file with an htm extention. Which makes me think that maybe I should move all those files into the main file that my site is in? (But it did work in the browser previews.) I created about two zillion files in creating this thing and they're scattered all over the place. I deleted my site from the web and don't want to reload it till it's correct.

It sounds like you need to do some organizing. I assume the thumbnails are images...so both they and the graphics they are linking to should be in the images folder...unless you intended to link the thumbnail to a page.

The thumbnails are images and they each connect to a page that is a blowup of the thumbnail picture with a caption underneath. If I were to highlight all those thumbnail-linked files to move to the main file, how would I do that? I am afraid of misplacing or erasing things. But you think that may be the problem? That they're all in another file? And thanks for the help. John

It's hard to tell exactly what you need to do without looking at your Folder List.

First, make sure all your images are in the images folder. They are the ones with the blue-green icon. Just drag and drop them onto the images folder. FP will rename them so their links will not be broken.

That will leave your page files in the root web. In this case, your page files probably end in .htm (unless you got fancy and have .asp or some other page format).

When you right click on the thumbnail and look at the hyperlink properties, it is correct that they should end in .htm since you put the blown up pic on a page with a caption. (Don't forget to put navigation on those pages.)

Did you place some of the page files in another folder? It's ok if you did...I'm just wondering...trying to figure out what the problem is.

Where is the image folder? When I look at the list of images in the file there is no image folder. The blue and green icons all have jpg after them and my thumbnail links are all htm. Do I want to put the jpg into the image folder (whenever I find the image folder)? Sorry to be so thick.

Goober -> RE: Thumbnails do not link to file. (7/15/2001 19:08:00)

Maybe it got accidentally deleted?

On the left...under where it says Folder List, there should be a folder named C:\My Documents\My Webs...., then under that there should be a folder named _private. They will look like manilla folders. There should be one named images, that looks just like _private.

If it's not there, you can make a new one.

Right click C:\My Documents\My Webs.... > New folder > name it images

Drag all your .jpgs into that folder.

While you're doing all that, make sure none of your file names have spaces and that they are in lower case letters.

I went to the file with the images in it -both jpg and htm. I opened one image and then when I clicked on the Folders List icon it produced a blank field to the left of the image. Isn't the image I want the complete htm one, rather than just the jpg image? Like I say I don't know much about this stuff.

Goober -> RE: Thumbnails do not link to file. (7/16/2001 20:19:00)

You do not want any .htm files in your images folder, only .jpgs and .gifs

.htm indicates that it is a page.

If you stuck pages in there, drag them out again.

Do you have many pages besides those with the enlarged pictures?

I still haven't found the image folder! I found an image folder in my main web folder, but none in the folder that holds most of the images jpg & htm. I highlighted one image and tried to move to that image folder but it wouldn't move. How do I find the thumbnail folder? John

Goober -> RE: Thumbnails do not link to file. (7/16/2001 20:13:00)

Oh, boy. Now I'm getting confused, too!

Let me get this straight....
You have your main web which contains a _private folder, an images folder, and another folder that you've put .jpgs and the pages that you made with the larger pictures. (?)

What did you name this folder that contains your .jpgs and picture pages?

If you made your thumbnails with FP they will not be in a folder. They will only be on the page where you made them.

The folder with the images is chv. The folder with my web in it is chv1. So if I look at the first thumbnail in my web page(chv1) it will say "../../chv/image1.htm" I have that _private folder and image folder under "My Webs". There is also my web folder "chv1" in this same list. So how do I open "chv1" and then drag the images back to the image folder in "My Webs"? Thanks, John

Goober -> RE: Thumbnails do not link to file. (7/16/2001 19:10:00)

What was your purpose in creating chv1? Don't move the images if you're planning for this to be a subweb eventually.

Otherwise...

Try copying and pasting the .jpgs into the images folder. I would say cut and paste, but I'd hate for you to somehow lose a picture. When they are all moved, delete them from chv1.

Are all your pages in chv1? or just the pages with the photos and captions?

They are all in chv1. Can I highlight all of them using the Ctrl button, then copy and paste?

Goober -> RE: Thumbnails do not link to file. (7/17/2001 20:11:00)

I wish.

I don't think FP lets you move more than one file at a time, unfortunately.

Guest -> RE: Thumbnails do not link to file. (7/17/2001 20:31:00)

How do I identify which thumbnails are which, i.e. their file name? As I said I've got a zillion files here and there.

Goober -> RE: Thumbnails do not link to file. (7/17/2001 20:17:00)

I give my files names that will ring a bell. If I was doing a site with cars I might name a graphic something like black_belair_57.jpg. If I had two sizes of the same picture, since I like to make my thumbnails in a graphics program instead of letting FP do it, the thumbnail would be black_belair_57_sm.jpg.

For your page with the caption, the page file name could be black_belair_57.htm.

Right click on the file name > Rename > type in the new name > Enter. FP will rename all the appropriate file names in the website so links will not be broken.

Thank you very much, Sally. I think I've got it all straightented out now. If not I'll be back, thanks again.
