Message boards - 1/31/2002 16:01:28
I need a message board (hey, like this one!) that I can publish with frontpage. I bought a website with a cgi script message board that I really like because it shows date, time, makes you give name, email address, etc. Of course, being cgi it won't publish with frontpage. What can I use to replace it?

Radio Guy, you're right you can't publish it, but you can ftp it. Why not use it? Just publish your site normally but ftp the script into your cgi directory(if you have that option with your host). (You can mark the script as "don't publish" in FP).

Thanks, Jego. I'm changing hosts now because the old one kept removing the frontpage extensions. The new one has already told me they will have a separate cgi directory so you're right, that should solve my problem.
I can mark the script as "Don't Publish"? How do you do that?

Which FP are you using? In FP2002 when you open your "Publish Web" dialogue box, you can click on a file or folder and select "Don't Publish" and it marks it with a red "don't" sign.

Unfortunately, I made the leap right from FP98 to 2002, so I can't even TELL you if that's how you do it in 2000!

I'm using FP2000 which only offers a few options in the dialogue box:
Publish only changed pages
Publish all pages
Include subwebs
Maybe it's time to upgrade to 2002.
By the way, is there a way to publish only a subweb without republishing the entire site? I suppose if I only made changes to the subweb that would serve the purpose, but the entire website is quite extensive and it sure would save some time if I could pinpoint a specific subweb, especially if it is a new one.
Thanks for all the help so far.

I would take the cgi script out of your local copy of the web altogether.

Make a folder in My Documents or somewhere like that and put it there. You will never need it in your local web anyway, just FTP it from the other folder.

I never keep scripts in the FP web folder on my hard drive - I think the rule of thumb is to keep FP and cgi seperate in this way, and it is a good one.

Sounds like a great idea, Katherine. I'll do that.
By the way, don't you guys have anything better to do on Saturday morning? (wait a minute, I'm doing here too..)

I second that, Radio Guy....great advice, Katherine. I was just about to move a couple over into their respective webs, but I won't do it now. I shall just *try* to remember where the heck I've put them when a change is required. (uh oh; I can see organizational problems coming!)

And btw Radio Guy...remember, Outfront is a truly International community, by the time Katherine was replying she'd probably already had a lovely big breakfast served to her in bed, a leisurely bath, masseuse had already been in and gone, maids had made up the beds, served lunch, she'd had a nap and was just then sitting down with an afternoon glass of something vintage to browse around the Forums whilst an exquisite dinner/supper for 12 of her closest friends was being prepared by the kitchen staff. And the nanny had brought her wee lad in, bathed and dressed in his afternoon outfit, for her to kiss sweetly on the forehead.

So, that would make you the one here on a Saturday morning....bowl of Cheerios besides your mouse, perhaps??

Jego... <shaking head in dispare>

Katherine only has one maid working on the weekend, it's the nanny's day off, and she fired the kitchen help a month ago. Tonight's supper was to be catered. (good kitchen help is so hard to find...)

About 9:30pm in Ireland now. 10:30am Sunday in New Zealand -- I wonder what Spooky's up to? I hear Sunday's his day off from changing dirty nappies.

Oh, poor Katherine..I didn't realize; I simply MUST keep up on my correspondence. It must be terribly difficult; but she shall prevail I'm sure.

And as far as Spooky goes,
quote:
I hear Sunday's his day off from changing dirty nappies.

..and I'm sure this will open up a whole can of worms, (or a whole pail of diapers)..but I've heard that the NZ & Aus males, unless they are "New Age" (and thereby frowned upon by their peers), do not change many nappies at all, at all.

Hmmmmmm?

I doubt that many would consider Spooky to be "New Age" ...at least not in this respect... was the nappy changing something I shouldn't have mentioned?

Sorry, Spooky.

Hello! What if your host doesn't offer cgi message board? Is there any way to get a board with FP 2000?

The only FP option...

In FP > File > New > Web > select Discussion Web Wizard -- needs FP extensions on host server to work. Outfront started out with using this kind of discussion board.

You might also check out these remotely hosted message boards.

I drop in here innocently to find that people have been fantasizing about my lifestyle

Looking at the time there is was mid afternoon last Saturday when I posted that. This was more the situation:

Looked at the pile of ironing and decided just to iron the clothes that would be worn today and shoved the rest behind closed doors for <never>tomorrow</comes>, tried to catch up on a week of ignored vacuuming/laundry/tidying/grocery shopping, refereed an ongoing tussle between 2 3year olds over Lego men, screamed several times "No, you cannot turn on Cartoon Network, it's a lovely day you should be playing outside"; contemplated the fact that I was turning into my mother, attempted, with the 'assistance' of above 3 year olds to turn 4 lbs of minced beef and sundry other stuff into a delicious bolognese sauce, provided playdough for assistant chefs to avoid wholescale food poisoning, divided sauce into smaller portions to be frozen to maintain the pretence of preparing dinners the following week, cleaned out dog house/rabbit hutch/goldfish tank and fed all inhabitants thereof, realised I could no longer see out kitchen window so washed all downstaris windows, scrapped playdough mixed with cornflakes and water off living room carpet/children's clothing.

Finally turned on Cartoon Network, plopped 3 year olds in front of it with a massive bowl of popcorn and fled to the office to come here. Remembering that their fathers were taking them to the park later decided to give in to their pleading and gave them Coke also

Compared to the real alternative being here on a Saturday morning sounds like bliss, but I could go with Jegos version!! <memo class="to_self">Keep buying lottery tickets</memo>
