BigBlue -> What ports does FrontPage use? (2/1/2002 12:32:05)

I'm setting up a site at home using PWS on a Windows ME box. I've got a DSL connection with a dynamic IP, and my PC is behind a Linksys router.

I've been able to setup the domain and reach the site through the Internet, but I can't connect to it with FrontPage using that same domain name. I suspect that's because I've only opened up port 80 on my router and that FP is using some other port(s) to connect to the server.

If I connect through my LAN (rather than the Internet) using the machine's IP or computer name, FrontPage works fine. But it would be nice to be able to access the site using FP while I'm travelling.

OK, the website is at your house/office? It sounds like an ISP configuration problem. Maybe their DNS server needs to know about your name...FQDN that is. Is the ISP linux or W2k? I'm not sure how that dynamic IP works with linux...PS. I believe the only port FP uses is 80. It's all HTTP!

All this to change a number into a name...

That's weird. I can browse to the site just fine; just can't open it with FrontPage. If FP is using port 80, it seems like it should work, too.

1) try browsing to the site in MSIE, then do File > Edit in FrontPage it should open in FP. (Weird, I know)

2) You might need Office 2000 SR1 update.

BigBlue,

I'm a little confused here. Your LAN is on the backside of your router. If your site is sitting on a host somewhere then you have to go outside the router to get to it i.e. the internet. Are you saying you can get to it if you use a dialup? Can you clarify this a little for me?

Your setup as you described it should work.

PB - I think his site is on his home PC

Thanks Caywind. I re-read it. You are correct. Oh well, I spend most of my life confused! Is this old age!

Yeah, the site is on a home pc. I often work on my laptop using my 802.11b wireless connection (SO sweet!). In that case, connecting with FrontPage by using the LAN IP is no big deal.

But...

I'd also like to connect with FrontPage from outside my LAN (like when I'm in the office). I can browse to the site with IE, but FP is a no-go.

Wow, that almost sounds like one of those things that MS "forgets" to tell you about. PWS is unable to be configured for more than one port....I don't know. Doesn't PWS have some cheesy little dialog box with four buttons on it and a big picture to take up space
