Graphics - 2/5/2002 14:04:50
I'm new to CorelDraw and FrontPage. I've created a logo in CorelDraw and need to use it in FrontPage. I export from CorelDraw, import into FrontPage and use the transparency tool to cover the "white rectangle" but the image changes and looks awful. It's completely unacceptable. What do I do?

Was the file that you created in Corel saved as a GIF? If not, when you make a color transparent, it has to be saved as a GIF and that messes up the colors.

Yes, I saved the file as GIF on export from CorelDraw. I imported it into FrontPage and applied the transparency feature. That's when the file changes. I've imported other graphics (clip art) and find the same situation! Any suggestions?

Do you have Microsoft Photo Editor installed on your computer? If so, take a look at the picture in that. View it in a large setting. Check to see that the color you are trying to make transparent is the only one there. Sometimes when files are saved as GIFs, there are colors change and some are added. The color you are trying to make transparent may actually be two or more colors tiled. If that is the case, you can try using the transparency tool in Photo Editor. It is a little better than the one if FP, but still not all that great.

It's often best to make a color transparent within the original graphics program. Here's a tutorial on CorelDraw that includes information on transparency.

Linda, thanks! I've created the transparency in CorelDraw per the instructions. FrontPage imports it and seemingly ignors it. I have to reapply the transparency in FrontPage and at that point, I lose more of the quality than I think I should. This is only a two color logo. I've also noticed the quality changes when I apply different themes or backgrounds.

Have you saved the page and viewed it in browser? Depending on how the transparency was created, I have seen FP "show" the background in normal view, but be fine when published.

Do you have this published somewhere so we can take a look?

Since you have Coreldraw, you must also have PhotoPaint since they come as a package. Export your item out of coreldraw as a tif. Then open it in Photopaint. Change the colors to indexed color and export it as a gif. You will then be able to set the transparancy to whatever color you want and you should get a very good result.

Hi guys, thanks for all the good info.

Linda, I don't have this publishsed yet. It's a new project (my second). I've saved it and it looks pretty bad. I think the problem is the way I created it in CD. I'm going to recreate it in a different way and see if that corrects my problem.

Gary, I tried your suggestion in CorelPaint and that's when I discovered the original creation might be the problem. Fortunately, this is a simple, two color logo.

Any other ideas, please share them. I've learned quite a lot just trying all the suggestions. Thanks!!

Barbara

Perhaps if you could give us more information regarding the 'looks terrible' we might be able to give more advise. Of course, if you could post the image somewhere for us to see, that would be even better.

Gary, this graphic is from a bitmap. Tracing it didn't work so I recreated it. It is a set of "stars" layered with text to one side. I used a star graphic from CorelDraw, resized, layered, added color, etc. When I export as a GIF, the transparency does not clean up all the "white" leaving a white jagged edge around the graphic. The image I recreated is not any better than the traced one.
The company I'm trying to build this web for started one - you can see the logo on that site. http://www.waste-system.com. You can see the image I'm working with there.

Appreciate the help guys
Barbara

I took a look at the logo (by the way, your link on it does not work) REALLY close and you can see that the white near the lettering is not just white, there are some cream colors and such mixed in. When you make the white transparent, all those other colors stay the same and can be seen VERY well on that blue background. PhotoEditor's transparency function will let you make similar colors transparent also (I think up to 10% similar). I am not sure if that would clean it up enough or not, but it might be worth a shot.

Well, I've created numerous images in coreldraw, exported the item as a tif, imported into photopaint and photoshop and had good success. One thing to do that will help a lot is to select all the items that you wish to keep (not transparent). Then expand the selection several pixels so that you really have a slightly larger area selected. For your example, if you were to select the star and lettering and then expand the selection 2 pixels, you would have a selection that matched the logo but slightly larger. Create a new layer and fill the selection with the background color that you will be laying this on. Then flatten the layers which will produce exactly what you now have only there will be a slight glow of the background color on your white background. Now, if you select the white as your transparency, when you save the gif, what will happen is that there should be no raggedness since any raggedness will be around the part that matches the background.
This may not make much sense but if you try fooling around with it, I think you'll see what I mean.
