Ready for a test drive! - 2/5/2002 17:03:24
Hi all,

Finally ready for some testing of a Photographers site www.barrydowephotography.com I have done. I am mainly worried about the speed of the roll overs on the gallery pages and the file sizes of the graphics. I used Dreamweaver (blasphemy?), for these pages as I thought it would be easier with the coding. So take a look if you will and let me know what you think. Thanks in advanced Rita

Looked at your site with Microsoft XP, IE 6.0. The site loaded slow, but that is not unusual since I run with 28.8 kbps on a 56K modem in a rural area.

My privacy warning icon kicked-in on the taskbar, telling me that cookies were being rejected. The icon tells me: (1) Blocks third-party cookies that do not have a compact privacy policy; (2) Blocks third-party cookies that use personally identifiable information without user consent. (3) Restricts first-party cookies that use personally identifiable information without user consent. Just a suggestion as to cookies and how the "bar" has been raised with XP.

The site itself looked good. I quickly travel through the pages, but no major problems seen. Due to lack of time, I did not allow all graphics to load.

I hope this helps.

Very attractive. Just three nit picky things-a little white space between the photos and text I usually like at least 5px; I also like a little white space at the bottom of the page or I feel like someone slammed on the brakes; make the logo a quick link to home. But I really had to stretch for these. Looks great without them. Good Job! Love the font. Also noticed a spelling error (I think) on the ariel page: "It also includes two views of the site with on 8X10 of each view" shouldn't that be "...one 8x10 of each..." ?

I use a DSL link so speed was not an issue. Very nice site. The gallery of b/w thumbnails that goes to color on mouseover is a nice affect.

Nice looking site but definitely a bit on the slow side. You might want to correct this on your two gallery pages.

"Photos make take a moment to download."

I think, therefore I am, I think.

Thanks all for your comments, I have updated the site to reflect your suggestions. About the cookies, I have no idea why it would be doing this? I did not set up the site for cookies, and wouldn't know how to even if I wanted to. So if anyone knows why it would be doing this I would be interested! Thanks again, Rita

The cookie is being set by

Why would you use a "off-site" counter?

Gil,

Thanks for getting back! I use an off-line hit counter because I got sick and tired of trying to get the FrontPage ones to work properly. I'm not sure if it was something I was doing wrong, I just eventually lost patience and began using Hitometer. From what I have seen on most Forums, it seems alot of people have trouble with FrontPages's version. But I had no idea that it would drop cookies, so I may have to try the FrontPage version again! The pictures appear awfully dark on my computer for some reason. And the large text under the banner...
Weddings Fine Portraits Aerial Photography
seems a bit out of place to me. Might look better smaller but bolded??

And "The proofs may be purchased with and order." Maybe that was meant to be with an order?

Steve,

About the text under the banner, I had decided to use text for these instead of making gifs out of them to save download time. But you bring up a good point. If your browser is set to a larger text size..it will obviously look other than how I designed it..I will probably go back and make a graphic out of it instead! Thanks for the feedback. Rita

This site was of special interest to me because I have spent the last month reserving reception space, hiring caterers, hiring a DJ, buying a gown, veil, tiara, shoes, invitations, decorations, favors, MOB dress and a million other things that I can't think of right now. And... I am giving a deposit to a photographer tomorrow. (my daughter is getting married in August)

The site is much more organized than most that I looked at when searching for a photog. in Omaha. I found it interesting that several photographers had done thier own sites. I guess if they are creative in photography they think it transfers to web design. NOT.

I like the colors alot. Nice and calm!!! One suggestion. Why not make the pop-up window the same size as the full size photo I had to scroll up and down to see the full photo.

Well I thought it was a nice clean fast loading site my self. Speed is not an issue with this site by any stretch. It is well laid out and easy to navigate. One thing though is the writing under you banner looks like navigation when you view it. I went to click on where it says up top Weddings Fine Portraits Arial Photography. I would hyper link them too. Here is some thing better for your Photo gallery. You have the pictures load into a new browser. have them load into their defined browser. When it loaded into my new window the window was small and I had to open the window. Use this code and it will do all the work and give the gallery that extra touch of professionalism.

Put this in the head of the document

Don't alter any thing there. Now in your hyper link put this instead of the http://

javascript:Zoom(images/portrait_gallery/port1_lg.jpg',350,343)

The numbers at the end define the picture width 350 and heigth 343 change those to match your picture. I put the first picture name and location and size to show you what it looks like. Now you don't need all those html files and just click on the photo to close it. Once you try this you will always use it for pictures.

Hi Rita,
As a follow-up as to my comments above as to cookies with Microsoft XP IE 6.0.

After Gil's comments above, I went to my own personal website hosted by www.rootsweb.com. Since RootsWeb does not support FrontPage server extensions, I stripped all of them, including my counter. For the counter, plus other options, I went to www.bravenet.com

To prove that an author is the worst editor, I never noticed until today that Gil was correct as to the off-site counter. I'm receiving the same cookie warning for my own website (due to BraveNet's options) as I did for your's.

Dear God, life gets complicated as to the Internet - thanks to Gil, I've discovered that I'm invading my own privacy

What is the deal with cookies? Every ISP has you logged of where you been and for how long, what's a cookie after that? Your ISP has more stuff on you than any cookie. You are scoping the wrong security problem
