after conversion to dhcp, PWS doesn't work - 2/7/2002 14:33:28
My internet provider (via a cable modem) has asked us to change our tcp/ip settings from static to dhcp. Now of course I cannot publish to the PWS. When I It says it cannot find the Web Server at the address at port 80. Check Proxy Settings. I cannot seem to find out how to re-configure the Web server to recognize the new tcp/ip server. Thanks, Mike

Try opening / publishing to: http://127.0.0.1

You cannot find a server at http://127.0.0.1? You are trying to publish to P{WS on the same machine, right? Gil Harvey The Host Factory Resellers are our Specialty Find a Web Professional

Thats right. The same computer I was trying to publish the frontpage site with does not allow me to open http://127.0.0.1 when I click on the hyperlink you sent. I get a "Server might be down, cannot connect" message". Everything else seems to be fine since I made the change. The email works and I can move thru the web as you can see. The PWS obviously wants to connect to the static web address that it was before I made the switch to dhcp. I'm guessing that the static address I had before is no longer valid so I need to somehow tell PWS where to look and I have no idea. I may have to add a new WEB Folder first, but I have no idea where to tell it to look to add it. Thanks

I meant - you are not working on one machine and publishing to another - Right? quote: I get a "Server might be down, cannot connect" message". Nope, not at all! 127.0.0.1 is a "loopback" IP that will always connect to the web server on the same machine it is typed into.a quote: I'm guessing that the static address I had before is no longer valid so I need to somehow tell PWS where to look and I have no idea. Web folder? Do you mean in C:/Documents/.... Or in C:Inetpub/... ? Gil Harvey The Host Factory Resellers are our Specialty Find a Web Professional

RE: after conversion to dhcp, PWS doesn't work - 2/7/2002 19:39:38
1) I'm only working on one machine 2)I was referring to the Web Folders in the Root Directory C:Inetpub/... Since your last message I re-installed PWS and now I can get the Homepage when I use 127.0.0.1 if that helps. However, when I try to Publish to the web via Frontpage and I select the web folder (in the C:Inetpub/...) directory that had previously worked (the name of the folder was my IP address before switching to dhcp) I get the error message saying it cannot find a server at that address. Thanks for your continued responses

You could always try importing the (now file-based) web, then publishing to http://127.0.0.1 Just a thought....

If its w2k, you may have a DNS issue. DHCP in w2k requires DNS. Since it is required, it must be properly configured. All this to change a number into a name...
