PS lock up when use layer effects - 2/11/2002 15:13:34
My Photoshop 6.0 locks up constantly when I double click on a layer so that I can do effects like drop shadow, stroke, etc. Does this happen to anyone else? Any idea how I can remedy this? My approach now is to just do the magical control+alt+delete, then open it again. But lately, it just locks up over and over. I do have other programs open (such as FP) while Im working.

This used to happen to me all the time. Finally I got fed up and put a Gig of RAM in my developing box. No real problems since then. So I guess what I would recomend is to get yourself as much ram as you can afford. You probably dont need a Gig but the more the better!

It does sound like a ram problem but if it was fine before and now its slow, its probably is a corrupted preference file.

You should do both of these things. First:
1. Exit from Photoshop.
2. Immediately after restarting Photoshop, press and hold Alt+Control+Shift.
3. Click Yes to "Delete the Adobe Photoshop Settings File?"
4. When you receive the prompt, ". . . Do you wish to customize your color settings now?," do one of the following:
- Click Yes if you want to edit the color settings. Then select the desired color settings in the Color Settings dialog box and click OK.
- Click No if you want to keep the current color settings. (The current settings will be listed as Custom in the Settings pop-up menu in the Color Settings dialog box.

Next, if you didnt already, update to Photoshop 6.0.1

You can do that here: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/main.html

That will solve any problems as far as PS goes. If it is your ram, well you know what to do..
