FTP? - 2/13/2002 11:59:23
I've just installed FP 2002 on a machine which is not connected to the Internet. Is there some way that I can get these files onto my ISP's server and get the extensions working properly? I don't want to connect it to the Internet, but can easily move files from it to an "internet-live" machine and FTP from there. I've tried using the publish to local hard disk option, but when the files get FTPed to the site, the FP extension stuff does not work. TIA Joe

You need to publish from within FP for the things that need extensions to work. FTPing will not do, it MUST be published. Katherine ++++++++++++++++++++++++ www.inkkdesign.com "Dogs have owners, cats have staff" Meeeooow!

Thanks, but while I did manage to get to the site now, by specifying FTP and nto http as the address, it still tells me that it needs the server extensions. I'll go and bang on the ISP and see if they have the 2002 version installed. It was not obvious that FP wanted the ftp address - just a stab in the dark which worked. Interestingly, the article you cite says that " It is possible, in some cases, to figure out what files have been created and thus need to be moved to your host server. " I thought I was doing that by publishing to a fresh directory - I guess FP omits something if it is not publishing to a properly set up server...:-(

Yes, if you're using features in FP that require server extensions, the server must have them installed. Check with your ISP to make sure everything is copacetic. Hope all this helps. "Sure I walk slow, but I never walk back." Abraham Lincoln

Update: I checked with the ISP and they said "oops -something was wrong, we fixed it." So, I published again to the site (no error messages this time), but - nthing appears in terms of graphics (borders, etc. etc.). In fact, I looked at a previous version that I had saved, and the html code was much smaller in the published version. So, I presume that FP is thinking that something is wrong, and not sending up the extra bits and pieces, even though they exist in the html file that I edit. Any ideas what has happened? TIA Joe

Could be a couple of things...when you published did you check "only those things that have changed"? or "publish the whole website"? Also, check your paths to your graphics to make sure the website isn't looking for something on your "C" drive. Do you have a URL? Perhaps one or more of us can take a look? B죣 Ñìçð£

I just tried the second option, and got the same old error message about the extensions. <sigh> Email fired to ISP and I've FTPed the files tat let the site look OK, even if the search etc don't work.

Okay, I've re-read this thread and (don't get me wrong on this)want to make sure you understand something. When you publish, you need to publish to the URL of your site...just type it in as: www.yoursitename.com or .org, or whatever. Select "Publish the whole site". The ISP should query you for a userid and password of some kind, and then you should be able to sit back while FP does it's thing. But before you do that, here's what I would do (granted, there may be a more elegant way to do this). I would use ftp or admin facility or something to get out to your URL and delete your old html and graphics files and start over as if it were a new site being published for the first time. But, before you do anything, post a URL so we can see what you DO have so far, and maybe we can save you all this bother..... B죣 Ñìçð£

OK, I do get asked for the user id and pw. Look at www.humanityinbusiness.com to see my current state of affairs.

Hi Joe, Okay, I went out to your site and it does appear your ISP doesn't have FP extensions on it OR they are corrupted. I'm going to have to bow to superior skills on this one. I know there is a way to check your host server to see if the extensions are there, but don't remember how. Hopefully, one of the moderators here will be able to check for you. Meanwhile, have you contacted your host? You will need to talk with them about this. If they don't respond, then it's time to change hosts. B죣 Ñìçð£

You can go here to check whether the extensions are installed. I just did a quick check and it apears they are NOT. http://www.dnswiz.com/fptype.htm I think, therefore I am, I think.

Well, it looks like the complaints to the ISP have had some effect - they have activated them. Also, they told me to publish to <http://domain.com>, not to <http://www.domain.com> and that seems to be better understood by FP. Tnaks to all for the hints.
