It's driving me nuts. This has been going on for a couple of weeks now and I just can't seem to get a handle on it. If I open an Access database directly while in FP I get a "server timed out" error on closing the dB. At first I thought it might be an Access thing but I'm getting timed out when I try to drag files into the site. This is an intranet site (actually 2 different sites on 2 different machines - same problem). This morning I attempted to drop a 500k pdf file into a folder and got timed out. I did the same with a 5k file and it went ok. ????? I'm sure it was something I did but for the life of me I can't find what I changed. Now for the really strange part. This only happens when I access the site using my laptop (FP2002). I can work perfectly well from another workstation (FP2000). I also have no problems with these issues when working on www sites with my laptop. It seemed to have started after I re-installed IIS on my laptop (with all current SP). Any ideas? Any at all? I think, therefore I am, I think.

Hi Mike, Do you experience any other delays when accessing files across the network? Also, what Operating system are you using? If you are using win2k, you should be able to tell get it to show you connection status on the taskbar (next to the clock). When there is a network disconnection it will indicate 'Working offline'. If this is the case, then it may be a faulty patch cable or network card. Another thing you could check for might be collision lights on your hub. If you network experiences a high volume of traffic, your hub can become a bottleneck. If this is the case, then it may be worthwhile purchasing a 10/100mb switch hub. These are hardware issue, if they don't apply, you should do a few searches at: http://www.microsoft.com/technet or (and sometimes better) http://www.dejanews.com I hope this helps in some way! Mark

Actually, it sounds like something, somewhere is looking for something be it machine or database or ? Check the server load when you try to start the FP on the laptop. If it is W2k, that may be too much for the server. I know it sounds incredible but NT or W2k run out of resources fast. You might also try some DNS stuff, tracert and nslookup, make sure it's all there... <spellcheck> </spellcheck>

Thanks for responding, It doesn't seem to be a hardware problem Mark. The servers are virtually a direct connection to the laptop. They're only three feet away from each other with the 10/100mb switch in the next room and no traffic at 5:00 am. C. this is truly a recent problem, everything worked fine until "I did something". I only hope I can figure it out. At this point after I open the db and close it I get the "server time out" message. I just minimized FP after getting the message and when I tried to maximize I can't because the server times out. I had to close it using task manager and re-open it??? If after getting the message I just try and close FP I get this, "There are files remaining on the import list. Do you want to import these before closing..." ah reckon, tharfo'e ah's, ah reckon.

I think I see your problem. Your using FP 2002 and FP 2000 on the same server, and you need to use one or the other. FP 2002 needs 2002 extensions, and FP 2000 needs, you guessed it, 2000 extensions. Find out which your host has and start using the appropriate FP version that matches. Thanks Phil, I'll check that out Monday A.M. You could say I'm the ISP as the servers are in my office. Maybe if I didn't experiment so much I would get these conflicts. Or at the least maybe I'd remember what I did. ah reckon, tharfo'e ah's, ah reckon.

Well it doesn't seem to be the extensions. Using FP2002 on the laptop and running the 2002 SE on both servers. I did some checking at the MS site and think I might need to get the XP SR1. The other thing is that although the servers have the 2002 SE I can work on both using FP2k (I just can't open the databases because they're Access 2000 and the machine with FP2k has Access 97). Obviously I can't use any of the 2002 components but... This all started with my playing around with the upload component, I don't grasp the connection but that's where it started. Sheesh, who knows? All the more reason to get away from FP when doing higher level database stuff. Why set yourself up for a train wreck when you don't have to? When doing this kind of stuff, go to Dreamweaver, or better yet, NetObjects Fusion. Woo Hoo, a solution has been found and you won't believe it. Apparently if the sun and moon are aligned and Jupiter is rising in Capricorn AND all of the following are true you will experience a server time out. The following software is installed on the client: MS Windows 2000 Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 Microsoft FrontPage 2000 or Microsoft FrontPage 2002 The following software is installed on the server: Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 or Microsoft Windows 2000 Microsoft Internet Information Services Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions 2002 or SharePoint Team Services The solution? Upgrade the browser to at least 5.5. Apparently when I rebuilt the laptop I installed IE 5.0 and didn't upgrade. Why did it occur out of the blue? I installed Win2K service pack 2.
