Web Site Is Down - 2/19/2002 13:59:27
While having http://www.yardener.com for several years, I am basically a newbie at FrontPage. I had a friend set up the site so all I have been doing is adding about 3000 pages using the navigation view. I never learned the basic coneptual part of setting up a web site in FrontPage. Now I must learn. I am changing the site form one completely free to everyone, to a proprietary site with markeint and subscription pages up front and the 3000 pages available only via password for subscribers. My friend added the five pages of marketing info and set up prelilminary password mechanism. My problem is that the site has crashed and my friend is not available to help at the moment. I must learn to take care of the problem myself. He did say that my idex file had disappeared and that it was in the Home Page folder in the Folder View - "Index.htm" is there. I have no idea what to do with it and am confused because I read that the home page for a web site on a server should be "default.htm"; "index.htm" is for computer based sites. When I look at the new home page in navigation view I can't see the other four pages in the view. Maybe that is what is called a "sub web" which I need to learn about? I need first to get my site back up on line and then I need to learn how to edit and add to the home pages which are in front of the password mechanism. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. I plan to be a regular visitor to this forum and this site. Thanks Jeff Ball Jeff Ball

Jeff- Be sure to have folder view showing. That is the best way to get a grip on the structure of your website. Index.htm will work. No need to change. It will still show up when the site is accessed, even if it's not showing up in Nav view. In navigation view, if you can see the home page, click on the + sign. (You've prob already done that.) The pages may have disappeared when the password thingy was added. Your friend needs to fill you in on that, or you've got another thing to learn besides FrontPage. Do you use navigation bars on the pages? (Automatically FrontPage-generated buttons or links on each page that appears in the navigation bar.) The problem probably has nothing to do with subwebs. Subweb folders will look different in folder view. I think there is a globe on the folder. There are probably issues with the password mechanism that may be affecting - I don't know much about that. Spend time getting to know this forum and you can learn about anything you need. Arnie Howes Edited by - arnie on 02/19/2002 15:53:44
