vision2000 -> How to tell if hosts server is reliable (2/21/2002 1:16:38)

Hi,

Is their a way to check if the servers of a host are reliable?

I have been unable to upload my site all day (and half the night).

Thank you,
Herman

Hmmm... that might be a sign.

Or something wrong on your end. Are you publishing or uploading with ftp? Have you tried contacting their tech support?

Lordy. They are probably ALL reliable..until they crash. It's not a matter of "if "..statistically it is a matter of "when". I think there must be a Murphy's law that says the system that bills your credit is NEVER out of service!

In the end, the same committee selected the host that designed camels.

went through a lot of info and reviews to find "the ONE" here..

Mine has been good, bad, bad, good after a recent Denial of Service attack. My site was down barely an hour, took 2 weeks for my server/site to get FP extensions back. A few of those using SQL are still in pain.

In the future, I want advance notice of unscheduled system outages!

I just figured this out.

Thanks for the feedback. - I thought (and they advertised)they were reliable until this happened.(the whole day).

Now I don't know much about servers, but doesn't each host have a back up system in case this happens (is this called a redundancy plan)?

The final explanation from their tech support was "it was a faulty script someone was using on their site, that was taking up all CPU resources"

Could this be a true explanation?

Is there any way to monitor them before I decide to jump ship (tough to do since I am promoting them also)?

Thank you
Herman

LOL - I don't think I've ever seen any Ads (any industry) saying they were unreliable.

Is there any way then to monitor ones site on a host, to prevent losing visitors while the systemm is down?

Thank you
Herman

There is no way you can tell anything until you hook up and start running. But, if you want to stack the deck in your favor, I would concentrate on Apache/Linux setups. My experience has been that they are much more stable, and most have user control panels that enable the customer to administer his or her own website. On Windows based servers, very little is user administered, and they are much more apt to go down. I have constant trouble with permissions on the one client I have on IIS.

Also remember:

Microsoft has admitted that IIS is full of security holes...
