Mojo -> RE: Doesn't anyone like red? (2/25/2002 22:40:01)

Robert-

I regret that you feel that members of the Outfront community are being too harsh in their critique of your site. I have not seen any post where someone was out of line.

I think I may understand your frustration, I find myself in your position often. The thing that irritates me more than anything is time. It is obvious that you have spent a great deal of time on your site. The embassy page that has been mentioned in earlier posts looks like it not only takes time, but it looks very boring to do also. Stuff like that nobody wants to do over.

I sometimes find myself convincing a client that method A is better than method B because I don't want to redo something. I always have to back off and tell the client "your right, it would work better this way". Doing that with a cheery voice is no small trick either.

I hope you don't become annoyed to the point that you stop contributing to the forums. I think some of your questions in other posts have led to some interesting answers and have given people the opportunity to lend assistance.

I feel you can contribute a lot to the forums. You are obviously passionate about what you do and take it very seriously. We need people like that. When members of the forum give out advice it may seem like criticism (sometimes it is...), but it is done with the intention of bettering the site and the Outfront forums. If we are always a glowing towards each others work we would loose our credibility. You asked "What is it, that causes self appointed experts, such as yourselvs, to become involved? the answer is: you asked us to become involved.

Robert, you are not the first person to get a little upset at the opinions of others on these forums -- and I promise you will not be the last. You have received some great compliments from many members on other posts *and* this post. I, just as another poster, think your graphic and logo work on the China site are very good. Much better than what I can do.... which is why you have not seen me asking for criticism my on design work! I KNOW what people will say! I am a developer that gets thrown into design from time to time... and it shows.

I hope you still participate in the forums. Remember, you WILL get upset at what people think, but also remember that those are the times when you can gain something.

I don't know your face, I have never heard your voice, I have no idea how you dress, but I know you are not a failure or you would never have the courage to build something and show it before peers and clients.

I look forward to helping you and hopefully someday being helped by you.

Joe

Dompros -> RE: Doesn't anyone like red? (2/26/2002 0:56:53)

How, good of you to reply, Joe...
You could have turned away, as others may.

Some of the replies that I receive here, cause anxiety, near excruciating.

I am suprised that anyone would consider that my input here would be of value other as an excellent example of ignorance, and that others would be thankful they didn't have to ask the dumb questions, but just learn from the answers...

That you have taken the time, to respond well thought, makes it easy to agree with you.

There are folks here, that more or less feel that I do not want,respect, nor appreciate their opinions, critiques and points...
The opposite is true. I scrutinize each comment with riveting seriousness.
I save each response of any conseqence for future review.
More than once, I've reviewed past posts, and said, Yep, they were right, I wish I'd have done what they suggested, instead of waiting til I'm buried in web hell!

The points that you've made, have helped me greatly in copeing with, the ideas and views presented by other forum members.

Believe me everyone, I am absolutly not rejecting or insulting you, because I haven't made the changes that you have suggested.

I've been told repetatedly by people here, who read my posts before I send, that I am so sarcastic, that it's a wonder that anyone will even speak to me. I admit that, So therefore, I appologize for that (that would be a small appology).

Thanks, Joe... and to any others of you, that my have a good thought towards me.

How about,lets flush this and do something else now!?

Adios, Roberto

Gil -> RE: Doesn't anyone like red? (2/26/2002 7:18:40)

I've been reading and chuckling...

After spending more years than I like to admit in the advertising business, I have to say, color is a VERY important part of any ad effort (and like it or not a commerical web site is an ad). Colors do not tend to cross cultural lines very well and RED is a prime example; To most westerners the color red denotes danger or at the very least caution - In thje Orient and especialy China RED is a most auspicious color. It helps to keep evil away.

Now, Robert, I don't remember anyone saying they didn't like RED, just that it was hard to read? Persoanly, I would use RED as the accent color and use CSS to place a white background behind the text for readability.

And before you ask about my crditentials - Nothing that would interest you or the others.

Cheers all....

Dompros -> RE: Doesn't anyone like red? (2/26/2002 12:29:13)

Thank you for your point, Gil...

Very interesting and informative,concerning peoples attitude about color in various parts of the world, I didn't know about the warding off evil thing... but I do notice that everything in the big cities in China, from mueseums to govt. exibits is wall to wall red, like red walls, red lights, red cloth under every exibit, red backgrounds, trimmed with black and encrusted with gold. while most of the people, and ordinary places appear to be mostly grey!

All of our stop signs are red, a red cape is waved at the bull!
I'm amazed, this is a huge learning event for me concerning using color in advertising!

I know that I wouldn't buy a red car, I rarely if ever wear red clothing, and don't care for red food much either! My wife writes with a red pen and I hate it!

On the other hand there are continuous accolades heard coming from the advertising industry when someone is able to succesfuly depart from the cookie cutter mold, and break away from the pack.

I'm now thinking about, how best to allow visitors to input their opinion about the site.
Any ideas out there on how to do that?

Thanks, Paula, I'm very happy to hear from you!

Thanks Gil, I haven't heard from you in a long time, You don't say much, but when you do it's a good thing...

Last night my wife made some red jello, with out me knowing and just handed me a bowl, with a big grin...

Bye for now, and thanks to all of you,

Best to you all and regards, Robert

Hi Robert,

My only complaint was that when I accessed your site, the bright red gave me a sunburn.

And OBTW, I checked your profile....

<quote>"Lung Tik Chuan Ren"
METAL DRAGON: The Metal Dragon is the most strong-willed Dragon. He is inflexible, unbending, and combative. He gives little regard to the feelings of others. This ruthlessness can result in a rapid rise to a position of authority, but often at the cost of destroying important relationships. It is futile to attempt to convince him that certain things are simply undoable. He will go it alone if he can't gain support. He succeeds because he refuses to accept failure.

THE DRAGON PERSONALITY TRAITS
The Dragon person is self confident and impulsive and consequently does not always listen to the advice of others. He is also a perfectionist and he sets high standards for himself.

Although strong and decisive the Dragon is not manipulative or sly. He refuses to deceive or compromise and fails to spot subversive intent.He enjoys being in command and like an emperor holding court he eliminates obstacles until success is his. </quote>

Thank you for responding, Paula...
Slowly but steadly I seem to be working my way to a functioning site, Somehow I always have to do it the hard way.
Thank you and all of the members and monitors the have added their part to the improvements...
Geeze, I hope the next one is a little eaiser!
I doesn't seem that I actually do a site that truly does have and end, One that I can be finished with and leave it alone...
What about you folks, Do you ever truly feel that it's really finished?

OK, "I, caved in under the pressure", and got rid of some of the red!
I realize that there tiny stripes in the table backgrounds, but at least the stripes aren't in the body.
So are there any comments on these changes?

I think by limiting the red it keeps it from blaring out at the visitor. Of course, I'm willing to tell you it stinks and save you all that work if you'll just point those brain teasers elsewhere.
The best I can come up with is ten to the minus 33 centemeters but I don't imagine you were talking about Quantum Physics.

erinatkins -> RE: Doesn't anyone like red? (3/11/2002 8:03:50)

I think the site is a little easier to read now. Having white in the middle allows me to read the info better. When it was red & black it was harder to read.

I like it better.

Dompros -> RE: Doesn't anyone like red? (3/11/2002 14:10:23)

J-man...
Sorry I didn't answer sooner.

I learned to do those cutout fonts from the paint shop pro users group. Search for pspug and you'll find it.
They provide live online classes, which I went to, You don't have to be a member, but you'll have more access to their support if you sign up.
It's kinda a hassle to go the online classes cause you must down a program either PIRC or MIRC or some initals like that, so that you can access the classes. The pspug site will explain how to get the program.
They also have tutorials, you can do at your own speed... The first time I went online to a class, I couldn't keep up with them... I was a problem causer over there too!
It took about 3 months, but I went from not being able to use PSP to understanding the fundementals.
Mostly it's about learning how to use the tools and their settings. Once you learn the settings you can make some progress.
Paint shop pro is a worth while investment, that you will be able to use for years.
I believe that there quite a few members and monitors here that use it.

OK, Bill no more brain teasers, but from now on, anywhere that you go in the world, you will always know the length of a piece of string... It's from one end to the middle doubled.
