Momx4 -> FrontPage 2002 - Search Page (2/22/2002 10:44:59)

I just published my first FrontPage Web Site and inserted the FrontPage search page and it appears to be searching the whole WWW. How do I set it to search only within our site?

imouthere -> RE: FrontPage 2002 - Search Page (2/22/2002 14:36:03)

Hey Momx4,

To make your search page only search your site right click on the Search Form and choose Search Form Properties. Go the the Search Results tab and for Scope Of Search choose This Web.

Hope this helps!

Scott

Thanks Scott, your help gave me a place to start, however, I do not have the "Scope of Search" option in the "Search Results" tab. There is "Results:All" (All-Was defalted and no dropdown list and Three Display options. I tried putting our domain name in place of "all" but that did not work. Now what should I do?

OK I think I see what you are talking about now. If I create a search page on a web thats not been published then I get the options you described. If I go to one of my published webs then I get the options I was speaking of. So I guess my next question is how did you publish your site? Did you use the publish tool or did you ftp it?

Scott

Momx4 -> RE: FrontPage 2002 - Search Page (2/23/2002 22:34:15)

Hey Scott, thanks for continuing to help me. I published the site by going to "File" - "Publish Web" within Front Page. Then I put in our domain name into the "To:" box etc. and then it published it. That is also how I have been doing the updates.
Thanks again for your help, I look forward to you next suggestion or question, Momx4

imouthere -> RE: FrontPage 2002 - Search Page (2/23/2002 23:10:55)

No problem, Thats what this place is for!

You published the way I would have.

Are you making your changes on your computer and then publishing the changes or are you editing live on your server?

Do you have a url we could look at?

Momx4 -> RE: FrontPage 2002 - Search Page (2/24/2002 1:20:18)

I make the changes on my computer and then push: file, publish, again. Is that what I as supposed to do? I tried right clicking on the live web on the search area but that did not give me the properties menu like you were talking about before. When I first published the site, the search searched, something OUTSIDE our site; now that I made a new search page (thinking that might make a difference) it goes to "page not found". Although it is still my old search page showing, which is weird since I marked "do not publish" on the old one and published the new one. Anyway, our site is WWW.Pro-Comm-Online.com. I hope you have more advice for me. Thanks, again Momx4

Momx4 -> RE: FrontPage 2002 - Search Page (2/24/2002 1:49:59)

Scott, I noticed something when I was trying to make, yet another, new search page. When I go to "insert-Web component-Web search" the default is "current Web". maybe that is why I am not getting the "Properties" options you first told me about. However, that still does not tell me why the search is NOW not working, even with the new search page. Hope that makes sense. Momx4

imouthere -> RE: FrontPage 2002 - Search Page (2/24/2002 1:53:21)

The best way Ive found is to make your changes on the server as apposed to republishing. To do so you go to File>Open Web then choose your web folders. You should see a file called WWW.Pro-Comm-Online.com . Highlight it and click open. Now your editing Live.

Once you make your changes go to File>Save or ctrl+s and it will save the file on the server.

Once you have your site open go to your folder view and double click your search page. If you still see the undesired options for your search form properties we'll have to wait for one of our more profecient Outfront freinds to help us.

Hope this helps.

Scott

Momx4 -> RE: FrontPage 2002 - Search Page (2/24/2002 3:06:00)

Will that save the changes on my computer? Or will the live site be the only current copy? Do I look for the site while on the internet or while in FrontPage? I tried it in FrontPage and I had a big problem when I went to look for the live site, like you suggested. I could not get back to were I usually did my work, but found it under the "recent webs" dropdown. I was really worried there for a little while. Anyway, I will try it while on the internet and see what that does. Even if I don't get my problem solved, I am learning a few new things along the way. No, that didn't work. I think I will try again tomorrow. Maybe I will just have to pay the $35.00 and call Tech Support.

I have another thought; Does it matter were the search file is on the navigation structure? I have it at the root, under the index/Welcome file. Is that correct?

Thanks again, Momx4

Momx4 -> RE: FrontPage 2002 - Search Page (2/24/2002 15:48:56)

I finally broke down and call MS tech support this am. They said for me to call my web server to make sure they are running the "indexing service". When I called the server they said that is probably the problem because they only turn that "on" by request. They will try to do that today, but for sure tomorrow.

I still have the problem of the hyperlinks in the shared border. Some are directed to my old search page and some are going to my new search page. Within FP all the links go to the new page, but not on the live site. I have recalculated the hyperlinks and published since then. Any ideas about this?

I will post again when the search is working. Maybe this will help someone else.

Thanks for your help, Momx4

imouthere -> RE: FrontPage 2002 - Search Page (2/24/2002 16:25:04)

Please do let me know if the index thing fixes it. I gotta say this one has had me befuzeled!

Sorry I couldn't be more help. Good luck with your site!

Momx4 -> RE: FrontPage 2002 - Search Page (2/24/2002 22:50:34)

OK, here is the latest.

The server "turned on" the search option for us. I found the "scope of search" option you were talking about on the live site but NOT on the one on my comtuter (interesting). It is VERY slow w/o DSL. Much slower then changing it and then re-publishing, however, it appears that it has to be done live.

First I changed the "scope of search" to our domain name and It didn't even find our name "Pro-Comm". Then I went back and changed it to "entire Web" since "This web" came up as the default and found search stuff outside our site. BUT "entire web" gave results of outside our web also, so I finally changed the option to "this web" and it still finds thing outside our web and nothing inside our web, So...

The search is working (again) however it is not searching OUR site. Now what?

I guess I will call MS tech support again in the AM and call my server to see what is going on.

Thanks for your continued interest it my issue. I have really learned a lot over the last day or so.

I still have some of the links going to the old (deleated) search page and I even re-calculated the hyperlinks while on the live site, but that did not help. Any Ideas about that? All the links work when I view it in browser on my not-live site.

Anyway, thanks again. Momx4

Would www.atomz.com be a possibility?

I'll take a look. Thanks for the suggetion.

Momx4 -> RE: FrontPage 2002 - Search Page (2/25/2002 20:40:21)

More Updates.

Basically, the server needed to define the search to only our site and it is working now. Hurray! However, With the hyperlinks on the top shared border, when you search for something it finds it on almost every page because it is in the shared border.

Any idea how I can search the site without including the shared borders?

I am going to post a new question about another shared border problem I am having.

Thanks for the help, Momx4

Momx4 -> RE: FrontPage 2002 - Search Page (2/26/2002 1:48:37)

FYI, for some reason, the search is not working AGAIN. That's the life of computers. I guess I will be calling the service provider AGAIN.

Momx4

Momx4 -> RE: FrontPage 2002 - Search Page (2/28/2002 22:36:52)

The server re-indexed the search again and then it was working. Then I was trying to find the answer to my Page banner problem (solved - see next post), then it wasn't working and then a few hour later is was. As of now, it is working. I think it had all to do with the Server. So there you have it.

To make a long story short, It's working, Hurray!

Thanks, MomX4
