Stuck with an ugly looking page... - 2/23/2002 17:50:10
Hi,

Web design is not really my greatest skill, and it probably shows. Nevertheless, I was asked to design a site for a university society, and I'd really appreciate some help.

Here's the temp address:
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/ossi.niiranen/

The links are not working, as I want to get the initial design done first. By biggest problem (that I know of) is the area right next to the text cell. I need to find a way to fill it some how, as it currently looks quite ugly.

Can the design still be saved? If yes, then how?

Greetings, Ozzy
It's never hopeless as long as your keyboard and monitor is working...
Don't be afraid to experiment, but first... open the html view, select all and copy the html to the clip board, paste it to notepad and save it as a file in your web or in my documents. Then if everything goes to ruin, just paste it back into the html view and your back to square one, with nothing lost but your time and labor. I usually make several progressive copies such as that, before I finish the first page.
The members and monitors will give you everything you need to get it right...

Regards, Robert

Actually there is no need to go to the bother of cutting and pasting into notepad, you can just save the page in another name and the original will still exist.

This design is just a smidgeon away from being very nice indeed. You can fill the left cell by adding a couple of breakout boxes to it where you can highlight information, news or whatever. I also think you need to decide whether the tables will be fixed with or 100% wide and go with the same for them all - it looks a bit odd now when the top of the page is 100%, the main table is fixed and the bottom is 100% again.

I think you need to reorganise a little to bring the right bar up so that it meets the black of the header.

It is really rather easier to see how the sort of things I am suggesting work if you have a smaple page - I grabbed your code and made a few changes, if you email me I will send you the file and you can play around with it.

When I first started with FP98, I just backed them up by saving them under another name...
But that all changed when FP crashed and I had to uninstal FP and reinstall, ended up with some missing and corrupted, files, pages and code,
Now, I backup anything that is important to me and my work in a seperate folder outside of FP.

Better safe than sorry...

Nothing is kept in FrontPage. Everything is kept on your hard drive in folders where you save it. Thus, you can uninstall and reinstall FP to your heart's content and your webs and files are not affected.

OH, That's right I forgot, folders and files on hard drives, never get corrupted, neither does the registry, or the autoexe.bat or config.sys it all runs smoothly and we don't need to back up on CD's or zip files either...

I would appear appropriate to some, that the prudent advice would be quite the opposite...

And that would be, NEVER, EVER, trust your critical files and data to any program or utility, ALWAYS back up outside of the program that you are working in.

You should be able to pull up your web page html, even if Front Page is not installed on your PC. So that you may upload your files to the server with an FTP program.

Hi Ozzy,

The layout is looking good and I like the colors. I have just a couple of suggestions.

You're having a bit of a table problem in NN4.7. The cell that has the body text is not stretching as it should. You need to set a width for it. Each row must add up to equal 100%. The row may have pixels in it, too, but always the percentages must add up to 100%.

Also, I would suggest making a graphic for the header title, "The Law Society." With just normal text, it looks jagged (and it's showing up quite small in NN4.7). In a graphics program you can anti-alias the words so they appear smooth on the edges.

Best wishes,
Sandy

Thank you for the tips.

I've had one user reporting errors with the menu I'm using. He is using IE5.5 and gets somekind of a debug message, after which the whole thing crashes.

What might cause that? I've tried the page with an older version of IE and it seemed to work fine.

Thank you for the tips on netscape Goober, I'll fix that this evening.
