Let me have it! - 2/23/2002 20:09:46
I spent part of today re-doing the entrance page to the commercial part of my website - trying to get it looking cleaner, as well as trying to optimize it a bit so I can start submitting it to search engines.

Here's the page:

I'd appreciate any comments, particularly on ways I can decrease the load time if you think it needs it, and also on this search engine stuff.

Thanks!

EWD

I only have comments about the design aspect, perhaps someone else will respond about the load and search engine part of your questions.

I looked at just that page using IE 5.5 on a 1024x768 monitor resolution. I found it hard to read because the black text didn't contrast enough with the background. The font looked like it was bolded too, but I didn't check to see if it was. Also the text went the full width of the page which made it very uncomfortable to read. Perhaps if you enclosed the text in a table with a specified width it would be easier. Also there is a lot of text. Could it be converted to bullet points? It's much easier to digest little chunks of information. I would probably not read all that unless I was extremely interested in the subject.

The page is rather long, I would recommend shortening the text or breaking it up into separate pages. Is all that information about payment options necessary? Could it be converted to bullets? The text on the buttons was hard to read and they took up a bit of space.

Just a bunch of questions, but I hope they help you in fine-tuning. Good luck with it!

Thanks EWD, I really value the constructive criticism here.

I reworked it some. Any better now?

Hi Kimberly,

I've just had a look at your site. Have to agree that the page is quite long. Is there any way you can break it down into seperate pages?

Another thought, might be to use rollovers on the buttons. I think rollovers look smart, but then you should see how I dress!!

Only other thing, I would change would be the background. It is probably just me, but I'm not keen on tiled images. They make it difficult to add graphics at times. Although, now I look at it again, it doesn't clash with anything and is in-keeping with the theme.

Apart from that, everything looks good!!

Mark

Hi Kimberly,

I think making the images smaller would make it much faster. It looks like some of them are 225X225 pixels. Maybe making them thumbnails like you have on the other pages would help. I also agree that tables would help the layout. You have a great logo, nice looking products. I think as your site develops you will see more and more success.

Good luck,

Brad

Kimberly,

I think you have all the ingredients; graphics, copy, navigation, etc. for a great web site. I agree with some of the other's comments. Tables and a white background will work wonders. Also, I feel your font size is way too big. In fact, way too big is the best way to describe the site. It is a little overpowering. If you would use your background colors around your navigation, say at the top and on the left side, it would really look good. Just my thoughts. Hope they help
