I have the basic idea for a web page layout, but as there will be many pages, I thought I should try to make a theme. How do I do it?

I would go to Format>Theme and select a suitable theme.
I can also modify the graphics with my own images.

Let me finish where I left off.
When you had selected a theme, any theme, that matches what you have in mind, then click Modify.

You can modify the Text attributes, the images and colors.

Does this sound too simple?

After you had modified a theme, remember to Save As another theme. This way, you will have accomplished making a theme.

You can also start with the [blank] theme and modify it. When applying a theme, do not check the box "apply with css". FP does not write css well.

A theme will give you certain elements, but to reuse the page layout for each page "save as" a template.... or simply save as template.htm and open this and "save as" pagename.htm for each new page.

Thanks for all the advice. However, the proposed site is expected to have about 100 pages and my client wants it to be special to him - I cannot use an existing theme. Therefore a further question: how do I make the navigation tools, components (eg.webbot)of FP work with my new "theme/temlate"?

Hi Ralph,

I don't think you are understanding what William and LB are telling ya. It's super easy to create a theme by just changing everything in an existing FrontPage theme's properties. For an example http://www.pausmotorsales.com/ IS using a theme, but not one you will see anywhere else. It is a very simplistic theme that only controls background color, font style, and font color.

The site also uses a template. By that I mean that I start working on a new page by opening one that is already done and >save as>type new page name. Make the changes for the new page and save it again.

Another site I did with a modified theme is here http://www.kwpnfm.com/treasuredaysbbq/ Took buttons from one theme, created a different bullet graphic, created a background graphic, etc.. You can do the same thing with any theme you have just replacing the existing graphics and colors with your own.

OK, so I've made my site (and its huge!) and now I want to add a bar of buttons - or a hotspot bar, I haven't yet decided - to the bottom border of most pages. How do I replace the existing text with my buttons or bar?

I must seem terribly thick to other members because no one has given me a reply. However, I need to find out how to put my own buttons in place of FP default text for hyperlinks in a border. Help, please!

Ralph,

It's not a matter of thickness it's just a bit slow around here most weekends. I saw your post and honestly can't offer you any better advice than you have received from William, LB and Richard already. One thing you might want to do is a search (up there ^^) for "modify theme" and others. There are many posts concerning changing themes, modifying buttons, graphics, etc.
This should also bump this up a bit for when the "real" experts come in.

Well, I was so busy adding content to my site that I left customizing the theme until now. Each time I find a tutorial it says to modify the theme.

Guess what? I cannot modify the theme because there isn't one. Help!

How do I put buttons or a hotspot button bar in the bottom border of my site?

Please, somebody tell me in simple terms.

In navigation view, drag your files into place where you want them. If the index page isn't there, that should be put in first. Now on the page itself, Insert > Navigation Bar and then change it's properties depending on what you want... you will want this one to be set for horizontal buttons; if you put your other pages all one level below home, check "child pages under home". You can experiment with other ways to do it later.

Now back to the directions posted above, in more detail...

Format > theme > it'll be on [No Theme] and you need to choose one of the others... the Blank theme is most often used for modifying, but you could choose any of them... > Modify > Graphics > Item: <choose> Horizontal Navigation > browse to the images you want to use and choose the font you want (active graphics means the buttons will have a mouseover action if you want it, otherwise select normal graphics at the bottom of the window) > click OK and you'll be back to the main theme window. Now click the "save as" button and name your new theme, then you can click OK to apply it to the given page or the whole web.

Obviously you'll want to change more than just the horizontal graphics... you can open the theme up again to change any other elements you want to.

Well, Linda, I have had some success in creating a theme, thanks to your helpful comments: You can see my first attempt at http://www.chinnor.net/trial_avmc

One matter that puzzles me is the width of the banner, that I made with MS Image Composer. It is (always) 600 pixels wide whereas most FP banners seem to vary with page width. How do I make mine do that?

Any help much appreciated.

Re. my last post, I forgot to add: I want the banner to have a left and right feature as shown on my test site http://www.chinnor.net/trial_avmc
with the centre of the banner able to expand or contract to suit the browser window. Anybody know how to do it?

Nope. That would have to do with your page layout. An FP theme banner needs to be a fixed width graphic. To get the look you want you'll need to create a one-row, three column table with one graphic in the first cell, the banner in the middle cell, and the final graphic in the third cell. You can change the table background color to be the same as the theme's banner, if needed.

However, I was fearful of losing this layout when I opened a "blank" theme and that's what I don't know how to control.
Q. If I remove the existing banner from my copy of "blank", will the theme still work?

The theme has no control over the layout. It only can modify certain elements such as font type, hyperlink colors, and graphics used for nav bars and banners. It cannot modify the layout of those elements.

The theme should have something for each of the elements (which is why FP has the "blank" ones in there), but you only need to modify the ones you will be using. If you don't want to use the banner you can take it out of your page layout.
