Does anyone know what this is? Is it for real? Not quite sure I understand it but know I've been having trouble accessing certain websites with our host who referred users to this url via their help desk.

It is definitely for real. Attacks of this type can and do bring down major portions of the internet. They happen far more frequently then the average user is aware of. The article is an excellent explanation.

A simple way to think about it might be: Your business depends on customers leaving you voicemail. A person or group of persons decides to shut your business down. They flood your voicemail with so many messages that it just shuts down and will take no more messages. You are out of business.

A Distributed Reflection DOS attack,

Transport: Normal, distributed via email or other common files. Can set itself up as reflector similar to IRCreflector or mail

Payload: Will cause infected computers to transmit requests for one certain web address repeatedly. If many infected computers (number growing rapidly) request it will cause all other requests to fail, Denial of Service

My web host had the Denial Of Service attack last week, (you may have seen my posting here about that), but it was resolved in 8 hours or so. Question, what does the web host do to stop the attack or does the attack just stop at some point?

I think that they have to route everything over to a new IP address? It's done at the server. I'm grabbing at straws here...actually I always wondered what the procedure was myself...

We have actually simplified it here.

DOS attacks come in different flavors. What you do to deal with it will depend on how and where your network is being hit and from where (one location or random locations)as well as what type of attack you are receiving.
