Dedicated Server - 2/27/2002 18:23:42
I am considering going the dedicated server route and am looking at the various offerings at http://www.datapipe.com in particular the easyAdmin option.

I have loads of questions though, inspite of the excellent help of Datapipe today which clarified a lot for me.

Here are a few.

Which should I go for - Free BSD or Linux RedHat?

How difficult is it to apply security patches? I would either have to pay a fair bit to have this done or do it myself. Is it something that I am going to have to spend half my life on? Is it something I could very easily mess up and cause major problems with?

Has anyone anything to say in general about the pros and cons of going this route rather than sticking with more standard reseller options?

I feel the need for control but am also a little concerned about the wisdom of having all my eggs in one basket so to speak.

how r u with linux? While I've found some panels and interfaces to be pretty easy...some of the other configuration and upgrade procedures are a step back to command line interfaces and config file editing. Mind you, I like the command line, but I only learned it because it was shoved down my face (MS, early 80's)...

All this to change a number into a name...

I am very happy with Linux. the first few times I had to telnet in and make some changes I was terrified.

I had a few glitches changing from Windoze... but nothing major or difficult except for the asp stuff. no matter what they tell you chilisoft is good but it is NOT the same!!!! That is why I am slowly but surely converting everything to PHP

If you are going with the Cobalt raq there are some quirks I will let you know about.

For pure rock - solid dependability - FreeBSD Always has been the #1 OS.

For ease of use (if you are not comfortable doing EVERYTHING from the command line, go with Linux.

Ditto...I can count on one hand how many patches we put on our bsd boxes and still have four fingers left over. we never touch them, they run forever. as for command line, unix is unix. most of what your going to be doing, if know one told you you probably wouldn't even know if you were on a bsd or linux box.

Hey abbeyvet, I popped in to datapipe.com and checked out the control panel. Looks way cool and easy. Storm is correct, there isn't much I can't do on my server from a web type interface. I actually never patch the linux box, it just runs and runs and runs....

Thanks Folks, appreciate the opinions. I have gone for it using Free BSD and a couple of extras added on like tape backups.

Hope I am doing the right thing but I think I am.
