Custom Site transfer to FP form problem... - 2/28/2002 13:49:32
I have a client who had a custom site built for a ton of cash, but the company did not support at all so they want to move the site in-house. My job is to transfer the site into FrontPage and get all the forms working properly. After talking with the new ISP they recommended rebuilding the forms from scratch - which I did. However, the forms do not work properly. They are forms designed to send an email to single recipient. The form is located at:

http://jbender.web.voyager.net/contact_online_subcontract.shtml

I am testing the site at this location because this company has hosted other FP sites that I have written with great results.

When the submit button is hit - I get this error message:

Method Not Allowed
The requested method POST is not allowed for the URL /contact_online_subcontract.shtml.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Apache/1.3.22 Server at jbender.web.voyager.net Port 80

Any ideas?

Thanks - JB

Yep,
The E-mail at the server is not configured correctly to send the message when the button is pressed. Some do it, some don't, but it sounds like yours does. So give them a call!

I have and this was their response. They had to reset the site as I screwed it up - so they reset the folder - I reposted the site and the same thing happened. Anyway - this was their first response.

Jim,

This should of been fixed when the Front Page was re-added, for some
reason it was not. Front Page forms tend to not work to well in this
environment, there is an much better method, using CGI scripting. Take
a look at http://support.voyagerhosting.net, and then click on the link
for FormCGI, and see if this will fit your needs.

I am trying to stay away form scripts as the woman that will be taking over the site is no that savvy.

Hi,

Just thought I would mention that I have had a similar problem with a host in the past. In the end I was told that my site was being hosted on a Unix server. I was also told that Unix servers don't support asp.

This is probably way off the mark, but thought I would mention it anyway.

Mark

then i would not be using FP for your forms. go out to the Big Nose Bird site and pull down their free form script and use it. it is very easy to set up and configure for all your form needs. I've had the same script running on my intranet box for going on two years and it handles a bunch of forms and not once has it ever failed to work. I forget it's there and thats the way it should be!!!

good luck

Your host is full of beans. One of FP's better features is it's handling of forms. makes it as easy as it comes. If you re-built the form WITH FrontPage, and the extensions were porperly installed, they should have worked flawlessly. If they do not, then the extensions are corrupted and need to be deleted and re-installed. FP rarely makes a mistake in coding that would result in the phenomenon you are experiencing.

This is none if my business, but my own personal opinion is you should do this site in Dreamweaver. Trying to migrate a site into FP and make the extentions work is a nightmare of gargantuan proportions. Especially if your site is forms intensive. Use a form script that sends the results to your e-mail, or where ever, and then teach your would-be administrator how to do Dreamweaver and she will have no problems.

tarheel...

I agree with you, but this is one of situations where parameters have been set and I need to live withing them. I use Dreamweaver for all projects that I have control over. However, this is not one of those situations. I am going to run a script for the email and put it to bed. Thanks for the response.

I've considered using Formmail to send the results of my forms as email. What steps will I need to follow. My plan was to place Formmail on a page in the cgi folder. Then, direct the form to this file in the forms properties window. Am I on the right track? is there anything else? Thanks.

The problem is that the form has an .shtml extension. The FrontPage form handler doesn't work with that extension. If you don't really need the SSI (server side includes), just rename the form with .html or .htm and it should work fine.

If the SSI is just for including a header, footer, etc., you can use FP's "include" component. This will work basically the same way and you'll still be able to use the FP form handler. Just make sure to rename the file with .html or .htm.

If you prefer to use FormMail, you'll need to ftp the script to your cgi-bin in ASCII mode, set the permission on the script to 755, set the path to Perl within the script (which is provided by your host), plus set the other parameters such as the path to sendmail and the valid referers (such as www.yourdomain.com) which specifies what domain/domains the form can be located on that use the script.

Within your form, you'll need to add hidden fields for what email address you want the results sent to, plus the url of a custom confirmation page if you want one, etc. There are instructions that come with the script as well as info on their website.

In the Form Properties, you'll want to check "Send to Other" and under Options, for the Action enter the path to the script such as cgi-bin/FormMail.pl.

Hope that helps..

Ginnie, I have this exact problem... I was very happy to find this site and your response... however...

The shtml page that I'm trying to include the form in has the nav structure contained in include/menu.inc. When converted to html everything remains except the nav bar... I can't seem to figure out how to get the 'include' function to allow me to include it... is it possible? What do you suggest?

**I can't even seem to get the header and footer to 'include'...**

Thanks in advance for your help, you all have a great forum here!

I may be off the mark here but when I use SSI to include pages I generally save them as .txt file. But FP inlcudes do not work with text files.

So, if using FP includes the included file needs to be a .htm file.

I usually just leave the bare code in it and have sites where I have mixed the two types of includes.

If someone else is going to be maintaining the site in FP I would generally stick with FP includes, primarily because they work nicely in FP, can be managed without ever looking at the html and you can see the included stuff on the page when working on it in FP. It also means that they can move the pages about and not mess up the include paths as FP will update it for them.

To add an FP inlcude just put your mouse wherever you want it to go and do Insert>Component>Include Page and browse to it.

Thank you for your answers... All of the SSI stuff was in text files, and instead, I just re-worked the pages into html... It was just easier that way. :)
